Share Our Lives: Our Go To Snacks
This month for Share Our lives we're talking about our go to snacks.
I honestly don't snack much anymore. I eat 3 main meals a day and rarely have an afternoon snack or any food after dinner. That said there are certain times of year or certain activities that bring on the snacking.
In summer I love ice cream. I try to hard to not indulge too much and won't keep it in the house. Around us ice cream places are only open from late spring until Labor day... or maybe mid-Sept. depending on the owner's whims.
Weekly hiking with our hiking group or my daily hikes with Evan rarely require any snacking/food but when Ben and I are on a trip or go on an all day summit hike I feel like I've more than earned some treats. We often pack trail mix but I do like one with lots of chocolate included!
On our Glacier National Park trip my husband and I splurged on a box of Nutty Bars and by the end of the week we had polished off the whole box. I don't typically eat any Debbie Snacks at all (I think the last time I even bought Debbie Snacks was pre- homeschooling so over 12 years ago!) but the pb/chocolate combination was great while hiking!
My mom had been cooking up fresh cookies for us this summer; I have a hard time bypassing freshly baked cookies! Especially chocolate chip.
- an apple or piece of fruit
- a handful of raw nuts and seeds
- carrots and hummus (or grape tomatoes or mini cucumbers)
- my own homemade granola bars
- natural peanut butter with apples or celery
or some combination of those
If I'm splurging at home I might have a Yasso Yogurt bar
or some kettle cooked chips (though I am real picky about the brand and ingredients!)
I hope you'll join us next month when we talk about how we make time for reading.

Yum to the ice cream. Where I live ice cream places are not really a thing but we do have the ice cream van driving around each evening.
ReplyDeleteThose Nutty Bars do sound good and your healthy snacks look delicious!
Funny enough we've noticed that even within the United States... I do think it's weird that ice cream places are VERY popular in New England but not nearly so much in say Virginia.
DeleteI´m not a big snacker either. I like the feeling of being hungry at mealtimes and if I snack a lot, I simply won´t be hungry. I have been good about keeping apples in the house and if I´m really hungry and dinner is still 2+ hours away, I´ll have an apple. Of course sometimes, ice cream sounds good and then I´ll indulge. Nutty Bars sound so good to me; however, the last time I gave in to the temptation to have one, I felt like the quality had gone down (and it´s not like the quality was super high to begin with!). I hope you guys enjoyed your Nutty Bars :).
ReplyDeleteYeah, I can definitely taste the difference in processed versus "real" sweets and I just don't like the processed ones anymore. I think it helped that in Montana that I was quite literally shaky and feeling like I was starving so I would have happily eaten anything... so yeah, those Nutty Bars tasted pretty good. LOL
DeleteYour granola bars look delish! Growing up, my dad would always buy Little Debbie's, and we'd occasionally have them for dessert... I'd forgotten about those and Nutter Butters! We like trail mix at our house too, but Trav is the one who usually buys it.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you! Now that I've started making my own I just can't seem to go back to buying them (though it sure is easier!).
DeleteI'm picky about baked goods and don't like artificial tasting things. The last time I had an oatmeal cream pie it tasted bad to me. I have stopped snacking like I used to. All of these are great healthy snack ideas.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about artificial tasting things-- I CAN NOT eat that canned frosting and have a hard time with most Debbie Snacks and processed foods now.
DeleteI have eaten many of your snacks - at this point as a senior, I am trying to eat smart and lose a little weight too. I am avoiding baked goods and sticking more with the carrots, celery, apples, etc. #MMBC
ReplyDeleteMe too; I'm always trying to shed pounds or at least stop myself from gaining. I try to eat mostly veggies with some fresh fruit but hardly ever baked goods or anything sugary.
DeleteI'm going to have to try Heath Snickerdoodle Cookies! Snickerdoodles are one of my favorites, if not my favorite.
ReplyDeleteThey were a delicious combo!
DeleteOh, gosh, I cannot have Cheetos in my house for the same reason you don't keep ice cream around. Speaking of such, the Yasso poppables are so. very. good. The bag never makes it to my house unopened! Your healthy snack plates look very fresh and inviting, though!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen or tried the poppables; they could be dangerous though. I like that the bars are already portioned out for me so I can't overindulge.
DeleteI love all of your snacking foods. I too try to keep ice cream out of the house.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI love that trail mix.
ReplyDeleteIt's a delicious one! I love that salty/sweet combination.
DeleteI love how you balance mindful eating with occasional indulgences. A bit of Ben & Jerry's never hurt anyone ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I used to LOVE Ben and Jerry's Chubby Hubby but then they changed the recipe and I didn't like it as much.
DeleteI know you love some good ice cream as a treat! It is hard to pass up a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie. Happy Monday!
ReplyDeleteIt really is!
DeleteI thought of you this weekend when we were eating our yummy ice cream :)
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks! I bet it was yummy.
DeleteSnickerdoodle and heath, oh be still my heart lol!
ReplyDeleteRight?! It was a delicious combination.
DeleteNuts and cheese sticks are my go to, although if there are good cookies in the house or salty snacks, watch out. Which is why there usually aren't! I'm enjoying autumn apples too.
ReplyDeleteI have learned to keep those snacks I can't resist out of the house too (or at least have my boys hide them so I don't know where they are).
DeleteWell, you certainly have given me several good ideas for some healthy snacks! Thank you! I am always looking for new ideas. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteSpending so much time on the couch this summer had me snacking a little too often. If I'm busy and staying active I don't snack, but just being planted there ugh. It's a hard habit to break. I like apples, pretzels, and the babybel cheeses but that's not what my summer snacks were lol. Have a nice week!
ReplyDeleteI find keeping busy definitely keeps me from snacking as so much of my snacking is caused by boredom.
DeleteI'm like you in that I hardly snack anymore. It used to be a norm, until I prioritized protein and fiber at each meal...it makes such a difference, right??
ReplyDeleteMy mom would never buy me Little Debbies, so I would eat them when I was babysitting.

It really does!
DeleteI don't snack much, but I try to go for higher protein items. But, I have been thinking about those Yasso bars. They look so good!

I think, overall, my diet is lacking in protein. I definitely don't think of eating protein snacks since I don't like meat and cheese is out. Other than the hummus and nuts I don't add much protein in.
DeleteMy go to snacks are french fries with mayonaise, chocolate and chips. If I'm trying to eat healthy I snack on cucumbers.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE French fries but rarely eat them; I like mine loaded with salt and vinegar.
DeleteI wish I could convince my hubby not to keep ice cream in the house! How do you do it? And your home made granola bars look store-bought. Mine never look so perfect.
ReplyDeleteMy husband doesn't want to eat ice cream all the time either and knows he has just as little self- control as I do! LOL. I do find the key to perfectly cut homemade granola bars is to let them cool completely for several hours in the fridge.
DeleteI simply can't have snacks in the house or I will eat them. My very soft spot are cookies. I have the willpower of a gnat (couldn't think of anything better ;-)).
ReplyDeleteIt is hard, that temptation is so easy to give into. My youngest told me he doesn't plan on keeping any food in his dorm room since he thinks he'd eat it too.
DeleteThere's nothing better than home baked cookies for a snack!
ReplyDeleteJill - Doused in Pink
I love freshly baked goods-- I miss Alec so much but gosh I am so relieved not to have his freshly baked treats hanging around every week. At least my mom only baked for us once a month!
DeleteThis is making me hungry! Those snickerdoodle heath cookies sound amazing. I must try that the next time I made snickerdoodles. I love those Yasso bars and the Kettle chips too!
ReplyDeleteI thought that combination of snickerdoodle and heath was perfect!
DeleteI haven't had a nutter butter in years. I did steal a fudge round (or 4) from my parents house last weekend.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we've ever had those! They sure do look yummy though (I Googled them).
DeleteYou had me at ice cream!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not picky about flavors either...
DeleteI LOVE the Kettle brand of chips. I especially love the honey dijon ones!!! Yum!!!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried that flavor.
DeleteI do love snacks and any of the ones you shared would work for me especially ice cream. I do also love a good crunchy sweet apple or a Yasso bar!!
ReplyDeleteApples this time of year when they're fresh from the orchard are my favorite!
DeleteLike you, I rarely snack. But I have a total weakness for trail mix. Best snack ever. I treat myself when I am traveling - especially flying! Can't wait for my next trip:)
ReplyDeleteYes, trail mix is great travel food!
DeleteI rarely snack (because I don't need to) but when I do, it is usually at certain times, and certain snacks. I didn't think about Nutty Buddy bars. Those are so good!
ReplyDeleteI thought I had published but didn't so I missed the linkup cut-off, so sharing here:https://www.livingonthesunnyside.com/share-our-lives-my-go-to-snacks/
I'll definitely head over to check that out!
