Glacier National Park Trip Day #4 part 2: Hiking Trail of Cedars & Avalance Lake

Once we finished our scenic boat tour we headed further down the Going to the Sun Road to park near the Trail of the Cedars/Avalanche Lake trail.

We walked part of the trail of the cedars then picked up the avalanche lake trail and hiked out to the lake for lunch.

This was my favorite hike in the park! For much of the avalanche lake trail you can see and/or hear a waterfall and brook. There are also spectacular view of the mountains around. The water carves out some incredible patterns in the rocks.

We had such perfect lighting at 11 when we set out on our hike. The sunlight was filtering through the trees.

We could finally see the trees opening up for the lake.

The lake is this incredible turquoise color!

We walked further down the lake to eat our lunch and could both hear and (sort of!) see the waterfalls that feed into the lake. It was still pretty smoky in parts of the park.

can you see the waterfall?

I just could not get over the color of the water or how clear it was!

You can see right to the bottom!

We picked up the rest of the Trail of the Cedars on our way down so we could finish that loop.

Once we walked backed to our car we drove over to check out the Apgar Village, got some ice cream, and bought a few clothing souvenirs. I got a new fleece and a hiking shirt; both were on sale!

We headed back to the rental, unpacked our hiking bags, took showers, and headed out to dinner. We tried a new place: Great Bear Cafe. It was incredible! My husband got the pulled pork sandwich and macaroni salad and I got the spinach salad. We were remarking that we hadn't had a single bad meal yet this entire trip!

    1. Most of the trails we stuck to were quite heavily trafficked; the only day I felt a bit unsure/unsafe was on our 5th day when we went hiking in the North Fork. I made sure to not stop talking once!

  5. Glacier National Park is a favorite of ours and your pics brought back a lot of sweet memories. Our love of the park led us then to go into Canada to Lake Louise and continue the adventure.

  6. I loved seeing these pictures! I got married on this trail on the bridge from the Trail of the Cedars right before the hike to the lake. When I went back in 2018, we had a picnic lunch on the trail. That lake is amazing and such stunning views. We got huckleberry ice cream at Apgar Village. So glad y'all enjoyed this!

    1. From what I've read and understand the water doesn't have the right nutrients in it to sustain plant growth... I think.

    1. Yeah we were a bit unsure about a few of the places we tried but other than 1 place we ate (that we didn't really pick-- the place we wanted to eat at was closed so they recommended another one to us-- that we hated!) we really had some great meals.

  28. I can see why this was your favorite trail. The views are incredible and the mountain lake is so gorgeous! I really wish I could visit this park but so afraid of grizzly bears!! I am sure it was helpful that other hikers where out at the same time.

    1. Yes, that helped A LOT. We ran into a few hikers that had seen bears but no one had any bad experiences with them-- the bears ambled off after a short time so that felt like a bit of a relief to hear too.

  29. Catching up...... I also loved this trail when we visited the park! I wa samazed by the PNW forest with all its ferns and greenery. and seeing avalanche damage made me realized the force of all that snow cascading down the mountain!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Definitely! A few of the trails we noticed HUGE boulders and could see all sorts of scratching embedded in the rock too and I'm guessing that's either from avalanches or past pressure from glacier moving across/depositing them.

  30. Wow, those pictures! The second one of looking down the waterfall is just spectacular. What a lovely trail! Thanks for sharing this post with all of us at the Will Blog for Comments #69 linkup. Hope to see you next week at #70, too, with more posts (old or new)!
