11th Grade Check In; How We Did With Evan's Junior of High School

Going into his 11th year of schooling Evan already had 18 high school credits (our state requires 25 credits for graduation and even though we fall under the umbrella of private school-- which means I can set my own standards-- I use the general requirements as a guide, knowing he wants to go to college).

Evan took a few classes at our local community college this year so he has more grades on this transcript than just those given to him by his mom. Plus he's going to need some recommendation letters from "others" too and we were hopeful this would give him a chance to make some connections with other teachers and staff and give him an idea of the workload required at a college level.  They wrote such glowing letters!!

Here's how we've done:

Math: Geometry-- 1 credit-- Check!

We had already started using both of these and we finished them up by the time he started his college math course.  Must Know High School Geometry  and  Everything You Need to Ace Geometry book.

He also decided to enroll in Math 137 Intermediate Algebra at the college-- 3 credits

English/Language Arts: He signed up for English 1010; Freshman Composition for the fall semester at the college-- 3 credits-- He did great!! Earning himself a final grade of 97!

History/Government: World History using this book, this graphic novel, this textbook, and we supplemented with discussions, as well as movies and books from our local library-- 1 credit

Science: Zoology using this textbook-- 1 credit- Check!  (However we did not like nor do I recommend; as a complete textbook I was surprised there was no questions, workbook, etc. to go with it! I ended up reading each chapter before Evan and writing up my own comprehension questions-- plus it mostly dealt with ocean/single celled organisms and animals).

Phys. Ed: 1/2 credit-- Check!

Music: Music history using this trivia book and this national geographic book with supplements from our library and lots and lots of listening to actual music from the different artists and genres talked about in each book. -- 1 credit  Check!

With these 10 1/2 credits he now has 28-- far surpassing the state requirements but he was adamant that he wanted another year before college (and to be 18-- which I agreed with) so I'll be sharing our 12th grade curriculum soon.

    1. Thank you! He seemed to enjoy going into the building... but I'm not sure he socialized all that much. He's pretty quiet.

  2. Good job on fulfilling so many credits for high school and it sounds he got some college credit as well. I think that all of my kids got their general or first English class for college done in high school through our state's college in high school program called College Credit Plus.

    1. Yeah he should have his basic math and English done; I was trying to get him to take another course or two this coming year but he doesn't feel the need... they aren't free classes so I'm not pushing it.

  3. Happy end of 11th grade! I think that is a good idea to make the community college connections and to provide some extra rigor (I hope!). I still wonder if I will teach again. It's in the blood and I could see myself enjoying a higher level.

    1. Thank you! I think he actually felt a bit relieved to find that college classes aren't nearly as hard as he made them out to be (though I reminded him taking one at a time is not the same as a full course load!).

  4. Wow, 28 credits by the end of his 11th year is really impressive, and it's great he's getting a taste of college-level work and building those connections. Congratulations to him.

  11. That's so impressive that he took some classes at the community college.
Do you have to buy these books or can you get them from the library?

    1. I buy them; we used to get a lot of our books from the library when they were younger but the time constraints on borrowing books makes it so hard with the upper grades when we need the books for most of the school year.
