Hmm.. I guess that title sounds a little deceiving; we didn't spend the month in Hawaii. Our plans were to spend 5 days on Maui and 5 Days on the Big Island so with travel days were gone for nearly 2 weeks. It was wonderful but exhausting! The weather was beautiful and it didn't hurt that we left snow and single digit temperatures behind.
1. So thankful that the diorama base Ian made for our village survived storage in our basement so well. Woke to some ice on the lake and decided to stay inside; I packed away all the fall decor and put up our Christmas village then, after dinner, drove Alec back to college. 5,173 steps.
a much needed healthy lunch after 3 days of Thanksgiving food and leftovers
2. So thankful for some great home workouts that make me feel strong. My leg and back were still hurting so I skipped the gym for a home workout then helped Evan with some schoolwork before we went out and ran some errands. 5,145 steps.
3. Grateful for a wonderful chat with my hair dresser. Another freezing morning and another workout at home before I got the woodstove going and helped Evan with his schoolwork. I went mid-morning for a trim and spent my afternoon by the woodstove working on a new puzzle, reading my book, and blogging. 6,911 steps.
4. Thankful for a lovey and delicious lunch out with my mother in law. Went to the gym, quick schooling with Evan, then we went to Target, and out to lunch with my mother in law. Worked on the laundry, keeping the woodstove going and making a meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and salad all afternoon. 9,165 steps.
5. So grateful we didn't lose power! I woke to snow and our power blinked a few times, squeezed in my workout between outages and Evan and I decided to work on school in the basement near the woodstove. I spent my afternoon working on our Hawaii trip itinerary, working on a new puzzle, and reading my book. 5,224 steps.
6. Grateful my husband decided to bring takeout home and I didn't have to cook dinner. Gym, cleaned the whole upstairs while Evan was at his last class, and then I read my book while Evan had his friend over (I loved listening to Evan, Ian, and Evan's friend all playing Mario Kart together!).
7. I was grateful that I already had a sympathy card in my stash of cards. I spent all morning cleaning the basement and the afternoon reading my book and working on my puzzle. 5,728 steps
8. Grateful I was able to resist the sweets Ben brought home from work over the weekend! Woke early and went grocery shopping, prepped food for the week and talked to Alec for a bit, researched things to do on the Big Island and then spent my afternoon baking bread and working on my puzzle. 5,602 steps.
9. Thankful the rain held off until the afternoon so we could squeeze in a hike! Gym, school with Evan, packed my bags for Hawaii (Ian and Evan did too), then ran a few errands and went hiking. 15,484 steps.
10 days in a carry-on? Who am I? (my toiletries will go in one of the boys' checked bags)
Alec's wedding cake final
10. So thankful we realized the 2 suitcases the boys were going to share would have resulted in oversize baggage fees upwards of $400 BEFORE we left; that was worth our time rearranging suitcases & clothing! Rainy day so after school with Evan I cleaned another few rooms in the house and settled down to read my book and work on my puzzle. 5,140 steps.
Repacked my bags to make sure we have leftover room for souvenirs!
11. So very thankful that I was able to cook dinner without our power going out as many streets near us were without! A very rainy day that started with a great gym workout, school with Evan, and a run to get gas and toiletries for the men at Target. 8,179 steps
This outfit only lasted 2 hours since I was so soaked by the time we got home that I just changed into sweats.
12. So grateful for the one on one time with Alec while driving home hearing all about this last week of finals (in great detail!). A quick workout at home before heading to pick Alec up for his long winter break then a quiet afternoon reading and blogging. 7,071 steps.
13. Grateful to end my day playing a fun game of Tri- Ominos with sons and mother in law! Gym, spent the morning helping Alec fill out the FAFSA, read my book, worked on the blog. 8,452 steps.
salad with apple and tofu nuggets-- YUM!
14. Thankful tor a lovely chat with my mom today; they're settling in well to their new home. A lazy day of reading with a quick grocery run to pick up just a few things to last the next couple of days. 4,077 steps.
15. So thankful I had nothing planned for the day since I ended up spending most of it in bed. My mother in law did stop by after lunch to drop off Christmas gifts for us all.
16. So grateful to already be feeling back to normal in time for our trip! A snowy/rainy day but Evan and I headed out to the bank and the library anyway. (I completely forgot to take any photos!) 6,273 steps.
17. Grateful for such an incredibly warm day in mid-December; I didn't even need a coat! Evan and I walked the river trail (while Ian was at work and Alec went to meet up with a bunch of his high school friends for lunch) then Ian, Alec, and I played Tri-ominoes with my mother in law and then ended our night in Hartford at the Holiday Inn. 15,746 steps.
18. So thankful that our travel day (though so long!) was pretty darn smooth. We woke up at 2:45 am EST and landed in Maui, Hawaii at would have been nearly 8 pm EST and still managed to stay up an additional 4 hours to try and get ourselves acclimated to local time. 5,105 steps
19. So thankful for such clear skies at the top of Mount Haleakala. We started our morning by walking to the bakery for some fresh cinnamon buns, a quick grocery shop, then we packed lunches to head into the national park. We checked out the summit section of Haleakala national park and finished our night with dinner at Moose McGillycuddy's and some shave ice. 18,347 steps.
chicken teriyaki with veggies, rice, and crushed macadamia nuts
Mai Tai shave ice
20. So thankful we made it all the way to the national park and back without any real problems! We drove the road to Hana today-- it was such a looong day but we did pack a lot in. 13,951 steps.
inside a lava tube
Banyan tree
red sand beach
black sand beach
21. So thankful for calm seas and a great day after our disastrous snorkel tour in the Caribbean. Snorkel tour day with Blue Water Rafting in Maui. 13,193 steps (or there abouts; my step counter reset itself while I was snorkeling but I know I was just under 5,000 at the time).
we saw so many whales too!
22. So thankful for a relaxing last day in Maui. We toured the botanical gardens and went to lunch on the south shore. 12,159 steps.
23. So thankful for another easy, uneventful travel day. We flew from Maui to the Big Island and checked into our next rental before picking up groceries at Wal-Mart. 8,032 steps.
Leaving Maui
Seeing the Big Island of Hawaii
24. So thankful for a beautiful day in another national park. We went to Volcanoes National park and actually saw some lava flowing. 19,376 steps.
25. So grateful that we not only got to see the green sand beach but that there was a seal on it too! 19,221 steps.
26. I was so grateful for a more relaxing vacation day today. We toured a local coffee farm, went to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park then hit the beach and the pool near our rental for the afternoon. 11,545 steps.
we started our day with fresh malasadas

our tour guide was fabulous!
Swimming in Keauhou Bay
27. So thankful my poor husband doesn't mind driving as we once again headed over to Hilo on the other side of the island to see some waterfalls, state parks, and botanical gardens. 11,574 steps.

Can you see the slight colors IN the waterfall?
Akaka Falls
We stumbled upon this botanical garden by accident but we just loved it!
Our dinner view; we ate at Sunset Kai Lanai
I got the seafood medley; crab cake, mahi mahi, and shrimp with rice and kabab veggies
28. So thankful we had zero troubles on our trip home. We went to breakfast at Papa Konas then headed to the airport by 11 am for some long/overnight flights. 5,417 steps.
our breakfast views!
Island style French toast
These two played chess while waiting to head to the airport
Kona's airport is open air
29. So thankful for a hot shower after nearly 24 hours in airports/airplanes and for my own bed again! We arrived home around noon and spent our afternoon resting, unpacking, opening mail, watering plants, etc. 7,444 steps.
30. So thankful that 15+ hours of sleep last night kept any jet lag at bay! When we got home at noon yesterday I elected to stay up until 5:30 and then slept through until 8:30 this morning so I had zero effects from jet lag today which was good because I did more laundry, groceries, meal prep, paid bills, packed away our Christmas village (the only decor I had out), opened gifts with my mother in law, etc. 10,040 steps.
31. So grateful today for the help of the whole family to clean the house in one morning! After getting the whole house cleaned I headed out shopping for birthday gifts (we have a few in early Jan.). 7,106 steps.
You saw such beautiful sites in Hawaii!! How did you decide where to go in Hawaii? Did you do research all online or did you talk to someone who'd recently been there? How wonderful that all your travels went smoothly. Looks like great memories were made!
I did all my research online and then just had a list of things we might want to do on each island but left each day's itinerary up to the family. My husband found and booked the snorkel tour & we stumbled upon both the botanical gardens we toured quite by accident. My only condition was that we had to visit both National parks so I could cross them off my list and we just lucked out that the volcano started erupting for 2 or 3 days while we were there.
What an incredible adventure- I love how you took advantage of the scenery with your epic hikes- the food looks incredible as do the sunsets- so happy for you and your fam!
What a month! The Hawaii trip looks amazing! There are so many movies set in Hawaii and I have never been. I need to learn about all the different islands. My sister went to Kauai for her honeymoon, though.
I really wanted to go to Kauai but my boys vetoed that since from what we read it's by far the quietest island; we did watch a few YouTube videos on the difference between the main islands so we could narrow it down. We nearly went on the cruise that stops at all the islands but I knew I'd want to really explore and not just spend 1 day on each one.
Ohh! I would like to spend a month in Hawaii though but 5 days still sounds amazing. It sounds like December was a great month for you! It looks like you have had some awful weather. We are due snow over the weekend. Eek! How lovely to go somewhere warm to escape the cold weather.
We missed a lot of snow and single digits while we were gone but we are supposed to get more snow this weekend and we had some real light flurries yesterday. I loved escaping the cold for the warm weather and it was so nice that it stayed light longer during the day too!
What a fantastic month. Hawaii looked incredible. I've been to the big island and it was gorgeous! I loved seeing your photos. That wedding cake is impressive! All of your outfits and your nails look so nice. The snow looks so pretty too! Happy New Year!
Jealous of your vacation. Hawaii is on my bucket list. I am also jealous of your snow. We are finally getting a few inches today. Sounds like you had a great month.
What a great post! Love the snow, love the pictures from Hawaii. You went from one extreme to the other. So glad you were able to pack so much in on your trip and cross those two parks off your list.
I love the pictures from your trip! You saw so much - some of the same things we did, but some I didn't know about. Maybe I'll get to go again someday! Hope you have a good weekend!
I don't even know where to start, this post was jam packed of good things. Amazing trip with absolutely stunning photos. I've never been to Hawaii but when I see photos of the beautiful nature it makes me want to put in on my travel bucket list. I am always thankful for home gym and the pelaton app especially in the wi ter. We get some really cold days and I am grateful to just stay indoors on those days. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year Joanne. I love the Sentence a Day concept as it shows so much of what has been happening. Your photos are really great, and it looks like you had a wonderful time in Hawaii. Your Hawaii photos brought back many memories of a holiday we had there many years ago.
It was interesting to see your pictures of Maui. Many familiar places, but it looks like you didn't see much of Lahaina. Was the Banyan tree from Lahaina or somewhere else? Glad you had a wonderful trip.
We didn't see much of Lahaina since they are still recovering from wildfires; we heard the banyan tree from there survived but my photo was from the national park at the complete opposite end of the island.
What glorious photos, Joanne! We really messed up by not going to Hawaii when Mike's oldest brother lived there. I knew about the black sand but not the red or green. Thanks for sharing this!
What a memorable month you've had, Joanne! Your photos of Hawaii capture so many beautiful landscapes and I love the way you were so thoughtful in your trip prep! So many amazing experiences... thanks for taking us along on your journey!
Thank you! Funny enough I'm chomping at the bit to plan our next trip too; but I think we'll be sticking to smaller trips closer to home this year after all the travels of 2024.
Joanne, Thanks so much for stopping by!! Loved seeing your beautiful pictures of Hawaii!! Gorgeous!! Looks like you had a wonderful Holiday Season!! Hugs, Deb Debbie-Dabble Blog
Every time you wear the heart sweater (from Dec 6), I want one! And OH MY WORD! Hawaii looks so amazing -- the waterfalls, the flowers, the beaches... I can't wait to read more about your trip.
Alec's wedding cake final was too pretty to eat!! Did he or all of you guys get a bite? My gosh, it is like art!! So enjoyed your photos from Hawaii. Have changed my mind, I want to go. Need some of that seafood medley, the island French toast in my life!! And all of the beautiful beaches, sunshine, tropical plants. Many of the plants you shared in photos grew around our apartment in Panama. I had forgotten about them. Thank goodness you guys realized about the suitcases and extra weight ahead of time. Oh, my gosh. That would have been terribly expensive. Looking forward to your day-to-day posts of your trip.
We all got a bite; he brought the whole top tier home. Hawaii really is so beautiful! I could see how many of the same plants would be growing in Panama since they share a similar climate.
Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? I can remember planning sleepovers and time with friends around TV Show lineups of our favorite shows... or else trying to set the VCR to record our favorite shows if we weren't going to be home. And through the years I had SO MANY favorites! Growing pains aired in 1985 which put me around age 8 and it stayed on the air until I was 15 or so; I'm pretty sure most people in my age group watched mostly for Kirk Cameron and all his antics. I still have a soft spot for family sit-coms! The Facts of Life aired when I was just 2 and stayed on the air until I was 11 so I'm sure the episodes I remember so fondly were either some of the later ones and then reruns shown later on when I was old enough to watch from the beginning. I think everyone would have loved an Edna Garret in their lives. Benson another sitcom that began airing when I was just 2 and was done by the time I was 9 (another one I must have watched mai...
I loved the challenge of this week's list for our 26 lists link up. I don't know about you but I really need to laugh more lately. It's such a great stress reliever. 1. Books-- I love a good funny book that makes me laugh out loud. I haven't read one in a while but if you have any recommendations I'm all ears. The last book I can remember making me laugh was the Un-Honeymooners. 2 The boys being silly. 3. Watching shows like America's Funniest Videos or Family Feud. 4. My husband. Most people don't realize it but he's actually pretty funny and often makes me laugh. 5. Whenever my sisters/ family get together and we get to reminiscing (particularly if my Aunt Elaine is around) we end up laughing so hard at all the old family stories that we are all in tears by the end of the night. It's fabulous. 6. Movies like Mom's Night Out, Christmas Vacation, and Grown Ups make me laugh out loud. 7. When my ...
I'm taking a break from recapping our Hawaii trip this week but will be back on Monday with daily posts from our time on the big island. Welcome to the first Share Our Lives link up of 2025! This month we're talking about how we're saving time on chores. Over the years I have tried so many different ways to streamline the household chores/cleaning. Now I'm not always 100% convinced that they save time but they definitely make cleaning the house seems like a more manageable job. Some things we've tried over the years: First and foremost stop dirt in it's tracks. We ask that people leave their shoes at the door! That cuts down on a lot of dirt coming into the house. Ask for help! I assigned tasks to each of the boys and rotate who had what chore monthly (something that no longer works with Ian working full time and Alec away at school but it was so nice while it lasted). Make it easy on yourself and others. I put stickers on our washe...
Our last full day in Maui, we decided to visit the Kula Botanical Gardens-- the one that we closing when we tried to stop on our first full day in Maui. We slept in a bit and enjoyed a lazy breakfast at/around the condo before heading out. It was another beautiful, clear day! We arrived at the botanical gardens around 9:30 and spent nearly 2 hours exploring. Evan and I took a crazy amount of photos and Alec brought along his sketchpad and pencil. My photos are in no particular order and I threw in some of Evan's as well... enjoy the roundup! notice the flowers growing OUT of the pink fronds! I was obsessed with these hanging flowers The green balls are macadamia nuts; this was a macadamia tree There were a couple of gazebos we saw ducks, cats, koi, geese, and more. This tree had the neatest bark! There were statues and benches and mosaics walkways We got to see painted eucalyptus! Pinks, greens, purples, so many colors you don't expect to see on...
Every time I Googled things to do in Maui, the Road to Hana popped up as a "must see." Though every sight warned it was a LONG journey and a tough ride with lots of switchbacks and 59 bridges; 46 of which are one lane. The speed limit for most of the road is only 15-20 MPH and you have to stop to let others pass. So we headed out early and made sure we had a full tank of gas (since there is none on the road!). We left our condo by 7 and didn't get home until 8 pm-- stopping for dinner this actually made it a fairly typical Road to Hana day (especially since we were staying on the other side of the island). waves near Ho' okipa lookout-- they were HUGE on the way back. I see how they nickname the big waves surf-break "jaws" Our first official stop on the road to Hana was at twin sisters falls: Only one twin was flowing; you can see the spot off to the left where the other fall should be a cool cavern off to the right with lots of roots hanging down There i...
