Some of My Favorite Shows and Movies I've Been Watching
A couple of times now I've tried to get into the habit of sharing a bit more regularly what we've been watching. I don't know about you but I often struggle with what to watch when one show ends... I try many shows and often get just an episode or a season in before I end up giving up on it.
Most of the shows we stream are NOT new shows. I tend to look for shows that have multiple seasons already lined up so once I get invested in the characters and storylines I don't have to wait around for new episodes to come out (but there are some shows we do watch as they air).
There have been a few shows we've really enjoyed lately.
Royal Pains is our latest show we're watching and while we're only 1/2 way through season 2 I am really enjoying it: Hank is a doctor that has retreated to the Hamptons to lick his wounds after losing his job, his fiancée, and most of his belongings. While there he gets hired on as a concierge doctor to the rich; a job he very reluctantly takes on.
Silicon Valley is one series we've recently finished in its entirety and while I can't say I loved the ending I really enjoyed the 6 seasons of will they/ wont they. Richard and his friends are trying to strike it rich in Silicon Valley with their latest tech invention but competition is fierce and sometimes they are the very reason they aren't succeeding. Socially awkward and incredibly quirky we thought this was a riot. It is rated R mostly for language, drug use, and drinking.
We Were the Lucky Ones-- I read the book years ago so I knew I was going to end up watching this 8 episode mini series. It's heartbreaking to watch since it centers around a large Jewish family living in Poland at the start of the second world war. Since I couldn't really remember much about the actual book I was on the edge of my seat anticipating what might happen next.
Resident Alien-- I honestly thought this was going to be such a stupid show and I rolled my eyes when my husband started watching it. I was reading a book on the couch so I didn't really care... but I found myself getting sucked in and it really made me laugh at times. The show does more and more far fetched as the series goes on so I really enjoyed the first season the most but it was definitely something different. An alien crash lands on Earth and takes over the body of a man living in the cabin in the woods but the man turns out to be the town doctor, Harry Vanderspeigle so he bumbles through the job and makes a few friends and enemies along the way.
Tracker--Colton Shaw roams the United States in his Airstream trailer using his tracking skills to help people out for the reward money they post. Each episode involves some type of mystery and Colton always manages to get to the bottom of it.
Ghosts and Ghosts UK-- I lumped these together because these two shows are actually quite similar. In each a young couple inherits an old house and decide to fix it up to turn into a B&B/inn. In both shows the woman somehow hits their heads and are knocked unconscious. When they wake up they can see ghosts. Turns out both houses are haunted with ghosts from a variety of eras who have all learned to live with one another. It's actually quite cute and quirky. I prefer the American version but that might just be because that's the one I started watching first and (again) the shows are very similar so by the time I started watching the UK version it felt quite redundant.
I'm still rewatching all the old Modern Family, Cougar Town, and Friends episodes; I feel like I seesaw between this line up of old show to binge and then move to Grace and Frankie, Schitt's Creek, and Life in Pieces
The shows I'm watching as they air:
- Not Dead Yet-- an obit writer that sees and hears the people she's been assigned to write about
- Abbott Elementary-- Following along with elementary school teachers in a very poor district
- 9-1-1-- The show written about LA first responders and has already been picked up for an 8th season. Some of the episodes are quite far fetched though..
- The Rookie-- On it's 6th season this show focuses on John Nolan and his friends as they patrol as LAPD police officers.
- The Conners-- A spinoff of the old Roseann show I grew up watching
- Jeopardy Masters
- Celebrity Wheel of Fortune
I've also watched a few really enjoyable movies too:
The Idea of You (prime)-- A 40 year old mom falls in love with a 20-something year old band singer. I found myself rooting for them despite their age difference (though I fully admit that I would not be so understanding if it was MY 20-something year old dating a 40 year old).
P.S. I Love You -- I don't know how I had never heard or seen of this movie before but I enjoyed it so much that I downloaded the book it was based on. Gerry dies and leaves a series of letters for his wife to help her through her grief; ending each letter with a P. S. I love you. It was sweet and sad and we see lots of flashbacks of their lives together and how she is coping with moving on after she's lost the love of her life.
One True Loves-- I had read this book by Taylor Jenkins Reid and really enjoyed it so I was excited to watch the movie. Emma and Jesse have a wonderful life together until the day he goes missing. 4 years later as Emma is about to marry her best friend Jesse comes back and Emma is stuck between her two great loves, her past and her future, and has to pick.
Mother of the Bridge-- A cute and very improbable little rom-com. When Lana's daughter unexpectedly announces she's getting married Lana does everything she can to be supportive. However, she is totally unprepared for the groom's father to be the very man that broke her heart many years ago.
What have you been watching? Are there any shows you think I should check out?
Thanks for this! I'm always on the lookout for new shows. At the moment I'm still watching the Swedish drama series called Bonus Family which is so good. I'm also enjoying the new season of Masterchef Australia and the latest season of Survivor. I started watching Australian Survivor but I gave up because I love American Survivor more! I thought the same about Resident Alien. Haha!

You're welcome!
DeleteThanks for sharing all of these shows! I want to see the Idea of You and I just started the new season on Bridgerton. My husband and I are rewatching Glee and we forgot all the amazing music they shared!

I started watching Bridgerton but by the end of the first show I could not keep track of who was who but I did really enjoy Glee!
DeleteThank you for sharing- I need some new shows and movies! P.S I Love You is one of my favorites of all time!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteI haven't heard of several of these, so thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteyou're welcome!
DeleteI had heard of a few of these but not nearly all. I will check some of these out!
ReplyDeleteI hope you find some you like!
DeleteI love Royal Pains.
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday.
I’m working on a project. I’m wondering if you’d be willing to help?

I will if I can!
DeleteWe are just about to finish The Middle, we both don't want it to end. We are looking forward to Bridgerton and I love Abbott too.
ReplyDeleteOh we LOVED the Middle! We used to watch that every week along with The Goldbergs as a family.
DeleteI love 9-1-1. I enjoy Tracker as well. I haven't read The Idea of You or We Were the Lucky Ones, but I have read One True Loves! So I wonder about watching those!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even realize The Idea of You was a book!
DeleteAhh! Yes, I like to watch a show with a few seasons, I have learned my lesson from the past and getting into a show only for it to be cancelled after a couple of seasons.
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of the shows that you have mentioned, especially Resident Alien. That one is new to me.
Exactly! I hate when I really like a show and either it's not picked up for a second season or they change it so much between seasons that I no longer enjoy it.
DeleteI'm rewatching Grace and Frankie too and love P. S. I Love You. Mother of the Bride was cute!
ReplyDeleteI thought Mother of the Bridge was cute too.
DeleteI never watch TV, but I do have "We were the Lucky Ones" and I guess I should go ahead and read it!
ReplyDeleteIt's a good one; though I really don't remember much about the book to know how closely they kept the show to the book.
DeleteThis is when I feel out of it because we hardly watch the popular shows, LOL
ReplyDeleteXOXO
Jodie
LOL!
DeleteThanks for all the tips. I'm putting Royal pains and the Rookie on my watchlist. I thought the same about Resident Alien! Also, we watched the UK Ghosts, but haven't checked out the US version. Great post!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteSuch a fun list! We've enjoyed "Tracker" this winter and I just started watching "911." I'm excited to check out a few of the movies you've highlighted, too! Wishing you a great weekend ahead, Joanne!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteI'm seeing a lot of my favorites here, along with some on my list ("We Were the Lucky Ones" among others. I've been catching up on a lot of my Brit shows on Acorn and Britbox and on "regular" TV watching "Maryland" on PBS and mourning the end of "Call the Midwife." Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of Maryland before but I just Googled it and it sounds like a show I might like; thanks for the suggestion.
DeleteI love these posts to help me find stuff to watch! I keep wanting to watch the Tracker, but I forget about it. I am trying to spend more free time reading :). Have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteIt is always a toss up between reading or watching TV... I try to find a good balance between the two.
DeleteI really like the British version of Ghosts. After we finished that, we started the American version, but it was so similar, it seemed boring. We do tend to binge watch shows rather than watch them as they come out. We just watched Baby Reindeer, and it is something else!
ReplyDeletehttps://marshainthemiddle.com/
I think that's what happened with me watching the American version first; the British one seemed boring! LOL
DeleteI want to watch the Idea of You and We Were the Lucky Ones but I need to read the books first! I should go back and watch some older series, because I have not watched most of them! I get so invested in the new stuff.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many shows I completely missed when they were new but watching them now I can see why they were so popular.
DeleteI almost don't know any of these! I watch a lot of British detective series and thrillers. And occasionally modern family.
ReplyDeleteJoanne,
ReplyDeleteSome of my favorites are The Rookie, 911,Tracker and I watched Royal Pains when it was on TV... Thanks so much for stopping by!! Yes, Danielle and I had a lovely Mother's Day!! I hope you did too!!
Hugs,
Deb

Thank you! I had a wonderful Mother's day.
DeleteI rarely watch (or read!) thrillers; I just can't handle the suspense.
ReplyDeleteWe loved Alien and watched it all. Now I'm really into The Resident on Netflix.. As I was an RN who worked in Surgical Intensive Care in a city hospital, I have to say it is the most realistic medical drama I've ever seen. My husband gets squeamish seeing the surgical scenes so he closes his eyes until that part is over...lol
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing! My husband loves seeing them and I just can not take it.
DeleteI love 911. TOTALLY unbelievable, but I just love the cast.
ReplyDeleteI thought The Idea of You was super cute!
Oh yes, totally unbelievable and getting more so by the season! LOL But I do love the cast.
DeleteI can't wait to watch The Idea of You! I loved the book!
ReplyDeleteIt was really cute.
DeleteP.S. I love you is a great cry it out movie! I just recently watched We Were the Lucky Ones, I had to pause some of the parts with the little kids. Heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I felt like it took me a long time to get through We Were the Lucky Ones because I kept pausing it and turning to something lighter to watch in between.
