Highlights and Favorites from January; One Sentence a Day

I feel like my sentence a day posts just keep getting longer... those run- on sentences are now becoming small paragraphs but I promise I do try to keep it brief!

1. We started the new year going out to breakfast with my mom, step-father, sister, and nephew (before my sister and her sons left to head home) then my husband and I went for a lovely 5 mile hike in the afternoon.

2. We all woke up to our alarms today and got back on track; with everyone off to work and school I ran next door to feed my mother in law's cat (yes she's STILL in the hospital),  hit the gym with my mom, worked on school with Evan, and had him drive me to the library for another driving lesson.

3. Gym, school with Evan, errands (with Evan driving!), a quick hike and then after lunch I got a call from my mother in law saying she was being released from the hospital (finally--- she was admitted on the 20th of December). I spent my afternoon driving her home, getting her prescriptions, and picking up groceries for her.

4. We woke to some light snow flurries and both Evan and I enjoyed a really light day of schoolwork since he had his annual physical appointment.

5. Up early to finish packing then headed to the gym with my mom before leaving for the airport with my husband to go on our cruise!

6. We woke up, had breakfast at our hotel and then took the shuttle to the ship. We spent our day exploring the Celebrity Apex.

7. Day 2 at sea...

I loved reading by the window on our balcony

playing movie trivia

Meeting key crew members

8. We went to Turquoise Bay in Roatan Honduras for a relaxing beach day.

Coming into port

my dessert was delicious!

meanwhile.. back at home Evan was taking photos of the snow and ice for me:

9. We were up bright and early to head out snorkeling in the 2nd largest coal reef in the world of the coast of Belize.....it was really not fun at all and we got stranded out on a caye waiting for boat parts...

10. The next day we docked in Cozumel, Mexico and toured some Mayan Ruins, met a Mayan Shaman, and spent a bit of time at the beach.

11. Our last port on Grand Cayman found us biking to hell (yep, that's what it's really called) and a rum distillery then spending an hour on the beach.

12. A final day at sea...

at the pool

Our captain and cruise director were both leaving for a "vacation" of their own so the crew said goodbye to them with a cake on our last night.

13. We were up early, ate breakfast, and flew home.

14. Both my husband and I woke up fighting off a nasty cold so I spent most of my day in bed... working on the blog and resting though Ian and I did buy his textbooks for college.

15. Another day spent predominantly in bed; though I did manage to finish my latest audiobook. Unfortunately grocery pick up was not working so we got takeout for dinner.

My husband and I SPLIT an order of chicken parm.

16. We woke to snow and no school so I snuggled in for another day in bed, I did get my oldest son to pick up groceries for us on the way home though!  Thankfully my husband was feeling better and spent the evening making salad, cutting up fruit, and cooking us dinner-- turkey tenderloins and rice pilaf.

17. My husband was feeling better so he went off to work, Ian was up bright and early to plow/sand/ice the road.  Alec had a 2 hour delay and since I was spending another day in bed, Evan had another day off from school and driving practice. I did spend my morning cleaning, paying bills, doing laundry etc. and by noon felt just awful again.

18. I woke feeling really good again but learned my lesson from yesterday and decided to spend one last day taking it easy-- reading, working on a puzzle, and watching TV.  Alec and Ian both had 1/2 days of work/school but I don't think I saw either one of them until dinnertime anyway.  It was the first family dinner together in nearly 2 weeks!
19. I got up and saw everyone off to work and school before Evan and I settled in to work on just 2 subjects (I had planned more but was still fighting off a headache).  I cleaned my entire bathroom top to bottom and then settled in bed for some more reading and resting. After lunch I also cleaned the 1/2 bath and then spent my afternoon by the wood stove working on blogging and finishing my book until it was time to make dinner.

20. My husband and I woke to a text from his mom: she drove herself to the ER and they were admitting her.  We went grocery shopping,  filled out the FAFSA with Alec, picked up my mother in law's car and took care of her cat.

21. I spent my morning cleaning house and doing laundry, then I spent my afternoon working on this year's family vacation.

22. After feeding the cat, I met my mom at the gym and then Evan and I worked on his schooling.  I cleaned the house and then took Evan to get his allergy tests applied at the dermatologists' office.

23. I went to feed my mother in law's cat and then spent a lazy morning on the computer. Evan and I skipped school because he had an early morning (2 hour long) driving appointment with his teacher. I spent my afternoon working on some very homeschool- reminiscent science experiments with Ian for his college course (food coloring moving through hot and cold water & dissolving egg shells in vinegar) then ended the night turning some homemade pitas Alec made into mini pizzas for our dinner before swinging by the hospital to drop off some supplies and things for my mother in law.

24. We got some snow overnight so Alec had a 2 hour delay; he's sleeping at my mother in law's so I didn't have to take care of the cat and my mom and I elected to skip the gym so I relaxed in bed until it was time to work on school with Evan. We learned a bit later on in the day that my husband's great aunt passed away.  In the afternoon I took Evan to get his allergy testing patches removed and read for the 1st time.

25. After a quick morning of schoolwork Evan and I headed out on a short little walk before his friend came over for the afternoon. It was so warm out but the warmth mixed with the ice and snow made for a very foggy day.

26. My mom and I went to the gym then Evan and I did a full day of school since our hike was canceled due to the rain.  I did get him to drive me to the store and home from his doctor's appointment (he had his 3rd check on his allergy test-- no contact allergies).  Then we anxiously awaited news from my mother in law's surgery... she was finally out of surgery by 7:30 and everything seemed to go well but we were unable to see her.

27.  My husband, Ian, and Alec all headed off to work while Evan and I met up with some friends for a brisk morning hike. In the late afternoon we all headed to the hospital to see my mother in law and then we went out to dinner on our way home; we stopped and ate at The Crossings.

Turkey BLT on ciabatta with house  made chips (but I didn't eat more than 3 of them; just the sandwich)

28. My husband and I were up early and at the grocery store in the rain before the snow came.. we spent most of our afternoon watching TV/ movies.

29. My mom and I worked out at the gym then Evan and I went to get his yearly bloodwork done. He drove after giving blood and brought me to the library before coming home; I told him he's basically going to be my chauffer until he gets his license. My mother in law was released from the hospital (hopefully for good this time!).

30.  I started my day fixing my nails, working on school with Evan, and then both him and I went out and ran a few errands for my mother in law (and yes I made Evan drive again).  I spent my afternoon cooking up some pumpkin mac and cheese and making a new dessert to bring with us to a really fun pot luck dinner my friend hosted for us and another homeschooling family.  We had a ball!

31. I met my mom at the gym, did a quick bit of schooling with Evan while inhaling some food and then headed out to bring my mother in law to the doctor's office for a follow up appointment. I spent my afternoon making lots and lots of cards.

How was your month?

  6. I love all of these outdoors pictures and it really makes me want to get out there. I feel like January was spent mostly indoors doing mostly non fun stuff. My goal this month is to get the boys outside regularly, have less screen time and get them more involved in the running of the household.

  10. I would love to try a cruise, but every time I suggest it my husband goes on a rant about needing to see land. I might have to wrestle together some friends and make a girl's trip of it.

Great pictures; I'm going to share the vacation ones with my husband.

  12. I had just about convinced my husband to go on a cruise, and he read about some long-term cruise where over 100 people were sick with a stomach bug! I just can't win! Your photos of the snow are simply stunning! I'm sure you get tired of it, but it's just lovely! Reading your monthly post always makes me feel like such an underachiever! Hahaha!

  17. One of the reasons I don't do this one is I think it would be too boring...yours aren't, but I think mine would be. So glad your MIL was released. LOVED this update, your cruise photos...all of it. I love those puzzles...and shoot. I type my comments as I read the post so I don't forget things...and saw she was back in the hospital. oh, and that she was released again. Phew. That dessert looks so good.

    1. Thank you! I often wonder how many people actually bother to read it ALL since I do feel like it can be boring and quite long (so I always include lots of photos!!). It has been quite the whirlwind with my MIL but since her last release/ surgery she seems to be getting a little bit better each day.
