Weigh- In Wednesday: NOT Throwing in the Towel

I nearly skipped my weigh in Wednesday post this month because I am so disgusted! After having worked so hard to drop those 2 pounds in August, I put them right back on... despite having joined the gym and adding regular hiking trips back into our weeks.

It's so frustrating but I know I can't just give up.  Each day, each meal, each snack is a new chance to make better choices.

I'm trying to focus on those positive choices I have made and give myself grace over those not so healthy ones.

  • I've been to the gym 3 days a week for a full month-- each workout seems to get easier despite knowing I'm working harder (I am much more out of breath and sweaty nowadays than when I first started)
  • We've been on lots and lots of hikes-- even hiking up Mount Wachusett this past week.
  • We had Klondike bars in the house and I managed to not eat a single one!  I was pretty proud of that.
I hardly took any food photos this month; which I think helps keep me accountable. So my hope is to take a photo of everything I eat for one solid week with the goal of sharing that here which will help keep me accountable.

Just 6 points for this whole plate!

homemade zucchini bread was a definite cheat this month

I am loving that rye and pumpernickel bread are only 2 points per slice; they make such tasty low point lunch sandwiches with lots of fresh veggies and grilled chicken

  1. Definitely give yourself grace. It´s very possible that the work outs are increasing your muscle mass and since muscle weighs more than fat, the number on the scale is not going down. That you can tell you´re in better shape one month into consistent time in the gym is the fact that I would try to concentrate on. But I know what it is like to be disappointed with the scale.

  2. What Maria said! GRACE- you got this :)

  3. Don't forget that muscle weighs more than fat! It could be that or even just water retention. I really vary up and down with 5 lbs from month to month, and I have noticed that around that time of the month, I can really tell the bloating increases tremendously. Your food choices are looking pretty amazing!

  4. Your last photo of the sandwich looks delicious! I really need to get back to WW. I have been successful several times in my life but then come crashing down again. Definitely more effort needed.

  5. I'm sorry that you're not having as much success as you'd like, but I agree with the first commenter that you're probably putting on muscle, and that alone could add weight. You should be proud of yourself for being so active and eating so healthily!

  6. It does make sense, like the others have said that with exercising more your muscle mass could be increasing. You exercise lots and eat so well, you are doing everything right. x

    1. I suppose so.. but I do know I could eat healthier and not allow myself such frequent treats.

  7. Hang in there. I lost 20 lbs on WW a few years ago. It took me forever. The good news is that it is a lot easier to keep it off than crash diets. You are doing all the right things. Yo go, girl.

  8. It does get frustrating, but the number on the scale isn't the true test of health. Your fitness and nutrient uptake makes your body healthy.
And you definitely get a standing ovation for not eating the Klondike bars!! That's amazing.
But knowing what I know, have you tried to reduce the amount of bread and processed grains? I know that was a huge factor with our natropath.

    1. Very true! I do try to limit bread and grains too but much like sugar, breads and pastas are so hard for me to limit...

  9. I was just saying today that my meals lately seem somewhat healthy, but I have been eating way too many desserts. This is a daily struggle and it is good to record the victories. You have had quite a few, so something to be proud of for sure!

    1. Yeah, it's amazing how easy it is to let desserts get out of control.

  10. Joanne,
I am right there with you....I have been stuck on a plateau since the start of the Summer...The humidity and heat stopped me from walking as much as I did in the cooler months....The swelling of my ankles, hands and eyelids have gone down with the return of cooler weather....Hopefully, I will start to get that scale to move down.....Hang in there....We can do this together!!!
    Hugs,
    Deb

    1. I hope you start to see the scale moving down again real soon now that it's cooler.

  11. I hear you, my friend! My gynecologist recommended intermittent fasting and meeting with another doctor who works on metabolism. That doctor is direct pay so I doubt I will go that route. I have been walking so I'm hoping that will soon begin to pay off. But, you were right...it takes so long to get my energy back up!

    1. I definitely can not do intermittent fasting (as it leads to longer and longer stretches of no food for me)... but I am determined to maintain my health and not just focus on my weight or pant size either.

  12. I'm right there with you. I've been at a plateau for weeks, even though I'm doing "all the things." I really like this type of post, by the way. I'm all about posting things for accountability. I want to try doing that more on my blog. You're doing great!!

  13. Out of all the diets I've tried, I find WW the hardest and most frustrating. The weight loss is so slow, and even though they say "no food is off limits" if you eat one thing off their list, you've pretty much used up your points for the day. I also don't like all the fat-free ingredients in their recipes. Fat free cheese is fake, processed, so not good for you and a lot of the fat free stuff is filled with ingredients one shouldn't be putting in their body. I feel I can't even use a lot of their recipes because I don't want to buy fake cheese. I don't know what to do myself. I'm thinking of trying the Mediterranean diet because at least I can eat healthy fats.

  14. I think you are doing amazing! You're already a busy mom and to fit in the gym 3 days a week on top is a massive achievement! And not forgetting all of the hikes you go on.
You should be super proud of yourself Joanne. :)

  15. You're definitely in the right zone with your mindset and determination. The meals look delicious and nutritious. I want to get back into a gym habit too, I'm only going once a week for Pilates. Thanks for linking at #WowOnWednesday

  16. Joanne, I know how you feel. I weighed in yesterday morning and I gained 1.2. That really sucks. But I agree with the many other folks, muscle does weigh more. And with your gym and hiking, that is bound to tone those muscles! Everyone at my meetings say there will be up and downs. I do know if I eat Mexican meals and even with me eating more of the beans and I order the vegetable quesadilla, the salt causes me to retain more water. Go the for long range. We are learning how to eat better, healthier and learning the correct serving portion. That is a life changer!

    1. All very true! I find anytime I eat pasta or grains with dinner the scale goes up the next morning.
