Not Just a Mom: House Rules

Welcome to another edition of the Not Just a Mom link up-- this month we're looking at our house rules.  I'll admit I really struggled with this one!

For this month's prompt I was stumped since it doesn't really feel like we have any house rules anymore.  We used to have tons of rules when my boys were little-- no food or drink outside the kitchen unless it's water (or if they were sick), fairly strict bedtimes, no hitting, etc. but as they've gotten older most of the rules have slowly gone away one by one.

I ended up polling my family to see what (if any!) rules they thought we had.

  • They do need to check in and let me know where they are when they're running late or if plans change (even the 18 year old-- this is just a courtesy so I won't worry)
  • Clean up after yourself and put your dishes in the sink or dishwasher
  • Treat others with respect

I hope you'll join us each month!  Next month we're sharing a day in the life-- weekend edition.  I'm pretty excited about that since I just love day in the life posts.

  1. Love your house rules- same here with the respect rule!

  2. Very resasonable and we pretty much always had the same. Even though my kids are at college they still "ask" if they can do certain things and I think it's really sweet and respectful.

    1. I think it's sweet that my boys sill keep me informed too and ask even though they really just need to tell me at this point.

  3. I love your "rules". Ours were the very same here at our house. I also ask that ours keep their own spaces clean- I don't like to clean their rooms. I will occasionally vacuum in there for them once a week, but they do the rest. I hope you had a great weekend!

    1. Oh I haven't cleaned their rooms (other than washing their sheets) in years. Ian does work 60+ hours a week and takes a class at the college so I will take pity on him and vacuum the floor or do his laundry once in awhile.

  5. No house rules anymore here either but we always made the boys check in when they were older. And as for Mr. Nine and I I guess it’s do all things with love, lol!

    1. Definitely! I think that's an unspoken rule between my husband and I too.

  6. I was noticing a lot of rules don't apply now, but we do have the tell me where you are rule!

    1. Right?! I didn't even realize we had outgrown so many rules until I sat to write this.

  7. I still check in with my parents when we go on vacation or something. Also they like for me to text when I get home from leaving their house.

    1. We went on vacation with my husband's aunt when I was in college and as soon as we landed she called her mom and asked if I needed to do the same. I didn't but I thought that was so sweet.

  8. I struggled to come up with our house rules, life does get easier as our kids get older and there are less rules.

    1. I'm not surprised; your girls seem pretty well behaved.

  10. We don't really have any rules here also since my girl is grown now. I do like your rules and we basically have the same here.

    1. Yep, it's wonderful that as they grow the reigns are slowly given up.

  11. Checking in is really important.. my husband and I do it as well. We let each other know when we are leaving work or a night time event we went to alone.

    1. Yeah, my husband and I do this as well; I even let my boys know when I'm leaving the house if they're home and tell them where I'm going and when I think I'll be back.

  12. I agree -- I couldn't think of any house rules either. But the "treat everyone with respect" is a good one.

    1. I think all the other rules stem from that one.

  13. Communication...that's huge even in our family of 2. I think it makes life so much easier.

  14. I think your rules are good ones, and they show that you've taught your kids how to be respectful thoughtful kids. I'm betting you had more when they were younger and those things are automatic now. Thanks for hosting.

    1. Oh definitely! We had lots and lots of rules when they were all little.

  15. I so agree with these, especially as kids get older. When my girls are home, I still ask they tell me where they are going and keep me posted on when they will be home. I was just telling someone about this today!

    1. I certainly don't expect that of Alec when he goes away to college but definitely anytime they are home or expected to be at home.

  16. Checking in is such an important one...especially as the kids are older and more independent.

  17. We didn't have many house rules either when the kids were little. I think we'd probably have more now if they were still around as the internet wasn't as big a thing as it is now. Fun to think about, Joanne!

    1. I was really concerned about the internet and all the online games through xbox and whatever when they were little. Thankfully, we never had any bad experiences with it though but they did have to use it in "communal" spaces and not in their rooms.

  18. I love that we can have fewer rules as the kids get older and understand the basics behind it! Sounds like your boys have learned well!

  19. We will definitely be implementing the rule about the kids letting us know where they are or if they're going to be late. I was always courteous and did that even when I was 18 and living at home. It's just the right thing to do! Don't need anyone worrying unnecessarily!

    1. Yep, I think it's just a courtesy thing too. Heck, even my husband and I check in with one another.
