Our Christmas Breakfast/ brunch Menu

Every other year we host Christmas brunch and it's our turn to host this year. Our menu doesn't vary much from year to year and everyone brings something so it tends to be a pretty fun low- key event. Though we call it brunch we really only serve a variety of breakfast foods but since we don't get together until nearly 10 it's definitely beyond breakfast time (but with everyone snacking on sweets from their stockings Christmas morning no one seems to mind eating so late).

I've never shared our "menu" on the blog though; in fact I don't think I've ever even taken a single photo of our Christmas morning brunch (all these photos were taken from pixabay)!

This year we plan on making:

Scrambled eggs (some years we make quiche) but I have a large electric skillet that I can whip up a whole batch of scrambled eggs for everyone all at once.

Bacon- we usually cook up 2 lbs for the 10-12 of us.

Either a fresh fruit platter or a fruit salad

Alec is making fresh strawberry jam filled croissants with white chocolate drizzle

My mother in law picks up muffins from a local bakery that makes giant specialty muffins in a bunch of different flavors (the family favorites tend to be chocolate chip, Oreo, carrot cake with cream cheese filling, and pistachio... though the red velvet with cream cheese filling are pretty good too!).

My sister in law brings this delicious blueberry/ cream cheese bake recipe that I will get photos and a recipe of one of these days to share with you all!

We have an assortment of drinks on hand-- Egg nog, coffee & creamer (my mother in law or sister in law provide), OJ, and weirdly enough lemonade (it's Christmas and pretty much anything goes!).

Growing up we always had coffee cake, pastries, or muffins for Christmas breakfast; my mom always planned something quick that we could eat after opening gifts that left her kitchen fairly clean for making our big Christmas dinner.

What are you most looking forward to eating on Christmas day?

  1. Your growing up on Christmas morning describes my kids' experiences to a T. Because every year we host a big Christmas lunch (usually around 1:30), breakfast has been store bought cinnamon rolls (the kids LOVE them, thankfully) because they're quick and easy and not too messy. My mind is always on lunch preparation and not getting the kitchen too messy. I like your brunch tradition and all the brunch foods you guys prepare. Let us know how the croissants turn out. They sound divine!

    1. I HATED the years we hosted both brunch and dinner (which was every other year until just a couple of years ago!) plus we used to host Christmas eve too!! It was SO MUCH work and I was so miserable. LOL. So I quit several years ago and my mom took over Christmas eve and my mother in law began hosting Christmas dinner and that works so much better to just focus on the one meal and just help with desserts or snacks for those other times. Alec had made homemade croissants a few times and they always turn out amazing; but this is our first time trying jam filled!

    1. Thank you! I can't wait to try them! He was going to make a practice batch this past weekend but wasn't feeling well so we'll just wing it that day.

  3. I think the croissants will be the star of the party! We usually have a simple breakfast of cinnamon rolls since we go to my mother-in-law's for lunch a little later.

    1. I am not a fan of many breakfast foods but I will definitely eat some bacon and a croissant on Christmas. I've vowed to try my sister in law's dish this year too even though I'm not really a fan of cooked blueberries.

    1. My grandparents always traveled to Florida on Christmas day; they loved that the traffic was much less.

    1. Yes! We load up on chocolates from our stockings too-- so much so I'm usually not hungry by brunch! LOL.

  9. Yum! Everything looks and sounds delicious! A late breakfast is much better so things aren't so rushed.

    1. Yes, I like that we don't have to rush. Most of us just wear our pj's to brunch or cozy leggings/ outfits so it's very low fuss as well.

  10. I honestly don't remember what we ate when I was a kid because all of the focus was on the presents! When my kids were little, we usually had cinnamon rolls or cinnamon coffee cake and bacon...lots and lots of bacon plus orange juice. Breakfast was never a big thing for any of my kids. Luckily, while my mom and aunts were alive, I never had to do any kind of big meals on holidays. For a few years, before we moved, my oldest sister would host, and we brought the sides. Since we've moved, I do the hosting, but there are only 10 of us so it's much more pared down. We have started having Italian food for Christmas because everyone likes it, and it can be made ahead of time!

  12. This sounds delicious, especially the croissants! Our brunch this year will be later than usual, so I will probably make some eggs & bacon before we go so we aren’t too hungry before we have our official brunch.

  13. This all sounds delicious! We always do bacon and fruit on Christmas morning, too, with some sort of pastry. This year I'm going to do French toast!

    1. Yum! We attended a Christmas brunch this past weekend and my husband's step mother makes cinnamon bun French toast and an apple French toast to go with their breakfast meats, fruits, eggs, etc.

  14. Our Christmas morning is tomorrow, and we are having eggs, cinnamon rolls and fruit. Keeping it pretty simple. I might do French toast instead of cinnamon rolls, but we'll see!
