Not Just a Mom-- Binge Watching TV Shows

This month's Not Just a Mom group is discussing our favorite TV shows to binge.  I really hope to get some great ideas from this link up as I am struggling to find great shows to watch this month!

I hope you'll head over and check out my co-hosts posts too and if you wrote up one of your own please link it up with us below.

I used to have a series I ran every few months listing the shows I was enjoying so I'm going to try and not repeat any of those lists (you can read them here, here, and here if you'd like.. I'm pretty sure I have a few more posts about shows too and you can always click on the shows link at the end of this post just before the comments).  Which means I'm focusing more on shows I've been watching in the past couple of years.  Many of the shows I really enjoyed are actually old shows that I never watched when it seemed like everyone else was!

I love a good sit com but feel like I've watched them all... so I've started turning to cozy little murder mysteries.

1. The Glades-- (Hulu): When Jim moves from Chicago to Palm Glade, Florida he thinks he'll have more time to play golf and relax but it turns out that Palm Glade has a lot of murders to solve. There's a cute little relationship or two thrown in the mix when Jim's not busy solving murders.  4 seasons

2. Only Murders in the Building-- (Hulu)-- Three strangers that are obsessed with true crime stories start a podcast when a grisly murder happens in their building. This dark comedy is a lot of fun and I'm usually a big fan of anything with Steve Martin & Martin Short!  2nd season in progress.

3. The Catch-- (Hulu)  I was so bummed that this show only had 2 seasons! It was a lot of fun.  Alice is a kick- ass Private Investigator and head of a top firm when she finds that she's been conned by her fiancé who disappears with millions of her and some of her client's money.  Juggling her career and while trying to hunt down Danny. It was definitely far fetched at times but fun anyway.

4. Burn Notice-- (Hulu) Michael Weston is a spy that has been burned; which means his career as a spy is over. Stuck in Miami he teams up with a few old friends to try and figure out who burned him and why.  Meanwhile they raise funds helping various people working as private investigators and vigilantes.  7 seasons

5. The Gilded Age-- (Prime) Having grown up near the Newport Mansions I have always been a bit taken with the gilded age and all it's over the top opulence.  This show is set in New York as new money meets old and the power struggle between the two. Marian Brooks has just come to New York to live with her aunts and finds herself smack dab in the middle of the war with her aunt representing old money and many of her contemporaries making up that new money class. 1 season with season 2 in the works.

6. Body of Proof-- (Hulu) Dr. Megan Hunt was a brilliant surgeon until a car accident ends her career.  She becomes a medical examiner and in no time proves that her brilliance extends beyond surgery.  With a little side romance or two and a storyline involving her daughter and ex- husband there are lots of fun plot lines running through this murder mystery. 3 seasons

7. Julia-- (HBO)-- My son (the burgeoning chef) and I watched this show together. Admittedly it's hard to binge a show that only has 1 season but we still loved it and I just had to include it on my list.  It's been so fun to learn more about Julia Child and what it was like making the first ever cooking show. 1 season with a 2nd in the works.

8. Schitt's Creek-- (Hulu) Admittedly I tried to watch this show a couple of times and never really got into it but the 3rd time was the charm and now I just LOVE it.  I've actually watched it through a few times and have begun to quote it!  The Rose family finds themself completely broke after their business manager embezzles all their money.  Stuck in a small town they once purchased as a joke all 4 family members must learn to live life without money. 6 seasons

9. The Righteous Gemstones-- (HBO) While it's classified as a comedy, I still just think of this show as watching a train wreck... I just could not look away.  The Gemstones are a family of televangelists who have made church going into a multi- million dollar empire.  But don't let their church going ways fool you; they are filled with greed, envy, and sin.   2 seasons with 3rd season in the works.

10.  Billions-- (First 4 seasons on Prime are free and season 5 & 6 require payment) While I refuse to pay for seasons 5 & 6 we do check often on all our streaming networks to see if we can keep watching since we just loved this show.  Bobby Axelrod is a billionaire hedge-fund manager and often pitted against Chuck Rhodes a U.S attorney but greed and corruption rule the day in these high stakes cat and mouse games. 7th season has been approved by the network.

11. Emily in Paris-- (Netflix) This is one show that I just love watching as much for the scenery as the plot lines!  I have always loved Paris.  Emily is sent from Chicago to work in Paris at a marketing firm but soon finds that no one wants the American perspective aside from her bosses back in Chicago.  2 seasons available with 3rd season already filming.

12. Castle-- (Hulu)  This was another fun murder mystery show that I just LOVED.  Richard Castle is a mystery novelist and teams up with Kate Beckett, a homicide detective to "observe" and ultimately help solve her cases. They have a real enemies to lovers kind of relationship that is just delicious to watch too.  8 seasons.

13. The Sopranos-- (HBO)  I never thought I was going to like this show and only grudgingly watched when my husband suggested it... but I quickly found that I was enthralled by the mobster mentality. Tony Soprano is head of a big crime family and ends up having to see a therapist to help him deal with panic attacks.  Someone always seems to be trying to off him or those close to him and there is an awful lot of violence surrounding them all but I did find it rather compelling.  6 seasons

14. Chernobyl-- (HBO miniseries)-- while it's not nearly as much fun to binge a miniseries since they end so quickly this one is a MUST see!  Based on the nuclear power plant break accident on April 26, 1986.  I had no idea everything that went into the clean up and just how far the radioactivity reached.

15. Young Sheldon-- (HBO)  Having been a huge fan of The Big Bang Theory, I suggested we try watching Young Sheldon after we had watched the whole Big Bang Theory again with them.  I think it's adorable and really enjoy the antics of young Sheldon and his older brother, younger sister, mee-maw, and parents.  It reminds me of the sit-coms we had when I was growing up.  5 season with CBS stating they've been picked up for 2 more seasons.

16. Younger-- (Hulu) When Liza tries to re-enter the workforce at 40, she finds that it's incredibly hard after having stayed home to manage house for her ex- husband and raise her daughter.  She decides to try and pass herself off as younger (26!) and gets a job working at a publishing house as an assistant to Diana.  It's funny and endearing and has a great cast of characters.  7 seasons.

17. Home Economics-- (Hulu) A sit-com about the relationship between 3 adult siblings and their families. Tom the oldest; a struggling writer trying to hold onto his middle class standing.  Connor the youngest; and firmly in the 1%.  Sarah the middle child; a school psychologist barely making ends meet.  They compete for attention and bragging rights, they fight and they bicker, but when push comes to shove they're always there for one another. 2 seasons with 3rd season in the works.

18. The Outer Banks-- (Netflix)-- While I often have mixed feelings about this show I do enjoy watching the Outer Banks.  John B and his friends are hunting for the treasure that led to his father's disappearance but they're not the only ones and they narrowly avoid death more than any teenager should ever have to! 2 seasons with 3rd in the works.

19. The Summer I turned Pretty --(Prime) Belly has always spent her summer in Cousins with her mother's best friend and her two boys but the summer she turned pretty was a summer where everything changed.  Her long time crush Conrad was hot and cold all summer long, she has her first real boy friend, and she's offered to join in on the debutante ball at the local country club... just to name a few.  With the 2nd season confirmed before the 1st one even aired I think this is a great show to start watching.

20.  The Lake-- (Prime)- Another new show that's already been picked up for season 2.  Admittedly I wasn't real sure about this show at first but it definitely grew on me and by the end of the season I did want to see how everything would play out for this cast of characters.  Justin and his biological daughter reunite for the summer at the lake where he grew up. The two are quickly drawn into some family drama over his father's old lake house and his evil step- sister.  Admittedly with only 8 episodes it's a quick binge but I thought it was funny and quirky.

So, do you have any recommendations for me?  I feel like I have watched ALL the shows on ALL our streaming networks by now.

I hope you'll join us next month when we share our favorite workouts/ places.

    1. It's funny that we've noticed in our house we each have our favorite streaming channels and Hulu seems to be mine. I watch most of my shows on Hulu.

  7. I so rarely watch anything, I have not watched anything on this list (maybe partial episodes of Schitts Creek when my husband was watching but I didn't even know what exactly it was about). But I think I'd enjoy the Steve Martin/Martin Short series as I love their comedy! I'd also like to want to watch Little Sheldon/Big Bang Theory some day but I don't think it's streaming on anything we're subscribed to. My daughter wants to watch The summer I turned pretty, not sure if she started it yet but maybe it's one we could watch together. I need more hours in the day for TV!!

  9. The Bear on HULU is so good! First ep is chaotic but the show is fantastic. First season just came out and hopefully they renew it. I haven’t seen Home Economics but that looks interesting! Always looking for a comedy! You might like Bless This Mess which is a comedy with only two seasons on HULU and Life in Pieces is also a comedy on HULU. That one has a few seasons.

  20. I agree with you 100% about The Catch! Such a good show! If you like the actress, you should watch The Killing...it's an oldy but a goody! And, her boyfriend was so good as Nate on Six Feet Under (another oldy). We tried to rewatch the Sopranos, but I just couldn't since I knew the ending! I love to binge watch shows...it seems to be the only way we do it anymore!
