Seal Tour in Newport, Rhode island

The younger boys and I kicked off April vacation with a day in Newport, Rhode Island.  We met up with some friends of ours for a seal watch boat tour and had the best time.  We saw well over 20 seals!

It was a beautiful, sunny, and clear day but it was really cold and windy.  Thankfully the boat was mostly enclosed and the seas were nice and calm.

Waiting in the marina

Pulling out away from the dock

Getting ready to spot the seals

I elected to forgo the binoculars and use my camera/ zoom lens.  It was really easy to spot the seals as we got closer.

Every now and then a head would move or a tail would flick.

We enjoyed seeing all the different colors and sizes of the seals.  We also learned that those way on top of the rock were already in position when the tide went out and are pretty much content to hang out there until the tide comes back in.

There were more seals in the water that hadn't yet found place on the rocks.  Every now and then we could see a nose or a tail sticking out of the water and even watched a few of the younger seals doing jumps.

My FAVORITE picture of the day!

Alec had the best time talking with the boat captain; asking all kinds of questions about the seals and their typical behavior.

We found a few lone seals not near the large rocks of others.

After leaving the seals behind we learned a bit about some sights around Newport on our way back to the dock.

Then we walked around Newport a bit to find some lunch.

We didn't end up getting back to our car until nearly 4 o'clock!

    1. They sure do! I have never gone on a whale watch tour though; I get a bit more nervous around large ocean animals.

    1. Well, they are in the bay to hide from predators so they can finally relax; but I would think life out in the open ocean isn't nearly so idyllic.
