Friday Favorites: The Week With the Blizzard

We had quite a week here this week!  Even though we got lots and lots of snow it was actually warm(er) most days this week than it has been in weeks and we got outside for lots and lots of hiking and walking.

We had such a fabulous day on Friday! We met our friends for a hike and ended up hiking nearly 2 hours!  We found a new trail to try and it was gently snowing by the time we made it back to our cars.

After a 2 hour hike we were all starving so I took the boys out to lunch.  They convinced me to try Railside Tavern and oh my goodness was the food ever fantastic!  I got a chicken Caesar wrap with their hand cut fries and it really hit the spot after working up such an appetite.

While the actual blizzard we got on Saturday was not a favorite of mine I did enjoy a low key day hanging at home around the fireplace. I cooked up some chicken soup, Dutch oven bread, and chocolate chip/chunk cookies.  YUM!

Just one of the small snow piles that accumulated near our house

Another favorite this week was our family snowshoeing walk!  We went out in our woods for about an hour making trails/tracks with our snowshoes; mostly walking single file since it's easier to follow in someone else's tracks.

My husband and I enjoyed a great date night out at the Black Dog Sunday night after dropping Alec for a make up driver's education class.

Tuesday, Ian, my mother in law, and I went snowshoeing around our woods again; mostly walking the same trail we had already forged over the weekend and adding a nice challenging hill in the middle.

Can you tell where the path is?

We met up with friends of our on Wednesday for another snowshoe hike; we had never tried snowshoeing at Bigelow Hollow and we were looking forward to meeting up with two other families for an outdoor adventure.

I finished up all my Valentine cards this weekend (I'll have a full post with photos of them on the blog on Valentine's day).

Thursday afternoon Ian, myself, and my mother in law played another few rounds of Rummikub before Ian took my mother in law out on the RZR for a snowy ride.

    1. I try! I just know I am a happier person after some fresh air and exercise but it can take a lot of work to get myself motivated to get out there.

    1. 70?! I'm happy if it's in the 20's & 30's! LOL. It's rainy, icy, and snowy all in one today. I would pick straight snow or straight rain over the messy mix if given a choice.

  7. Hi Joanne. I'd heard that folks up in your corner of the country got some heavy snow. If you're safe and warm, it sure is beautiful.

  8. I had a couple kids home for.the blizzard so I cooked up a storm, and after they left, we had a nice, quiet snow shoe walk.

  11. You got a lot of snow. And then the cookies after that. Sounds amazing. I want to go snowshoeing and we just haven't done that this year.

    1. It was so much work snowshoeing in our deep powdery snow. It was much easier snowshoeing towards the end of the week when it had melted and turned a bit slushier; that way we didn't sink nearly as much.

  15. It's always SO impressive how you get outside even when the weather is less than ideal Joanne. But snowshoeing would be so fun especially in all of that snow.

  19. How cool doing snowshoeing walks! I've only heard about them being a "thing" in Italy until I read this post. That's a lot of snow there! But your photo of the book in front of the fire was my favourite. Have a lovely week!

  21. I can't believe how much snowshoeing you've done! We tried it for the first time and it was fun but more challenging than hiking! I love cozy snow days....but prefer them on weekdays when I get off from work! Hope you had a great weekend!

    1. We think it is far more challenging than hiking too but I was so surprised that my Weight Watchers app logs them the same!

  23. It's a whole other world to an Australian Summer, although it's been a pretty et and mild-mannered one here, although not all round. It's a big country. Your photos look great and I'd love a few of your cookies, although it's Apricot Pie and ice cream tonight here.
    Best wishes,

  24. It's all so pristine and white! Very different to your Summer photos. Glad you could get out and enjoy the outdoors and have somewhere warm to recover afterwards. I'm not sure how I'd handle all that snow, but it's beautiful to look at in pictures.

    1. LOL. That's pretty much how I feel about snow; having lived here my whole life I do know how to handle it but I much prefer looking at snow than having to deal with the actual snow.

    1. I make a crusty and easy no knead bread using my cast iron Dutch oven; it's quick (for fresh bread anyway) and tastes soo good! (https://www.jennycancook.com/recipes/2-hour-fastest-no-knead-bread/)

  28. That snow is just beautiful. So pristine. Love the photo of the frozen brook. The way the water froze around the rocks. Would love to try snowshoeing. Maybe we need a getaway sometime to a location where there is a lot of snow. One year we had reservations to go to somewhere snowy...I can't remember where (how sad) and we had a very unexpected snowfall here in El Paso and our flights were canceled.
