Not Just a Mom: Favorite Small Shops

It's the second Monday of the month and time for the Not Just a Mom link up.  This month we're talking about our favorite small shops.  If we were talking about small businesses I think I'd have a lot more to say but I don't really do much shopping for Christmas and we don't have many small shops in our area.

I don't shop Etsy either so this is going to be a really short post (though I do love to browse on Etsy and get crafting ideas!).

Most of my nephews and nieces are at an age where they'd rather get money.  We buy photo gifts for our parents (with the kids pictures so they're really grandparent gifts) and then just a few things for our boys.  It makes Christmas shopping so much easier but makes Christmas feel a bit weird; especially this year with 1/2 my family having moved down south now.

We had an adorable chocolatier called Kay's Sweet Spot that I just loved to visit. They sold delicious homemade chocolates of all kinds including a wide variety of flavored truffles.  It was dangerous to go in there with everything smelling so wonderful but they've shut their doors.

I do have a few friends that sell products like Color Street and Stampin Up! that I like to try and support.   We also have lots of small non-chain restaurants in our area and we try to support them over the larger chains (which is pretty easy to do since we don't have many chains in our area).

How do you shop small & local?

  1. Oh I love Stampin' Up! I used to go to Stampin' Up! parties once a month with some coworkers. I might need to go dig all that stuff out of my basement!

  2. I think small, independent restaurants are the best ones to eat at- they have their own character and unique menu items!

  3. I love small indie restaurants! I think my favorite small shop was originally on Etsy - Made by Mary. Her jewelry is hand-stamped and so beautiful!

  4. Shopping small is so important! I’m one of those people that never sold anything but I’ve added a red Aspen nails tab to my blog and started selling them just because I believe in them so much! I love little independent restaurants! Have a great week!

    1. Oh I've sold many things through the years; mostly things I just loved because then at least I could get a discount and maybe make a little money.

  7. My goal this Christmas is to shop local as much as I can. I really want to help keep locally-owned shops open.

    1. We try to do that too and things like my son's karate school or when my boys took music lessons helped support local/ small businesses.

  10. I'm a huge believer in supporting the small guys. I think Etsy is a great resource for that, but we are lucky to have many small businesses close to us too. Plus I have a couple of friends that have online stores so I am always trying to support them (feed my clothing addiction, haha) too.

    1. I have enjoyed seeing all the fun things you find at the auction. I don't think I have ever been to an auction.

  13. It's so hard when small shops close because you can't support everyone but they need it to stay open. What a Catch-22 :(

  14. Kind of a tough prompt this month. We have a Mexican restaurant we love and support as often as our pocketbook will allow. There's a great seasonal shop that opens around Halloween and closes up shortly after New Years that we have shopped in recent years. But I don't have a favorite local boutique. There is a little shop I have been trying to get to that has handmade jewelry. Maybe I need to make visiting it a bucket list item.
