My 10 Favorite Summer Foods

Oh boy, this month's 10 on the 10th was rather tricky.  I have SO MANY favorite summer foods that it was hard to narrow my list down to just 10! I finally decided to group many of my favorites into broader categories but I could still think of so many more to add-- marinated chicken, roasted asparagus, potato salad, the list goes on and on...

1.Frozen yogurt/ popsicle- I love a nice cool dessert in the heat of summer.  In the past few years we've begun making our own frozen yogurt pops using fresh summer fruit and they are delicious!  Though we are huge fans of Yasso, Enlightened, and even Outshine bars.

2. Clam cakes with clam chowder and other seafood favorites--  I love fresh seafood and there is just nothing better than being near the shoreline in the summer and getting some seasonal favorites.

3. Burgers on the grill-- I love my burgers grilled medium well and served with fresh sliced tomato, lettuce, and sautéed mushrooms.  YUM!

4.  Corn on the cob-- We like to steam our corn and serve with salt and butter. Simple and delicious.

5.  Pasta or macaroni salad-- There is hardly a week that goes by in the summer when I haven't made a fresh pasta or macaroni salad.  I have so many "favorite" recipes that we rarely make the same one twice!

6.  Vegetable/ fruit salads-- Tossed salad, fruit salad, asparagus/strawberry salad... there aren't really any combination of fruit or vegetable salad that I don't enjoy in summer. All the veggies and fruits taste so much better when they're farm fresh.

7. Fresh picked fruits-- We try to get to our local orchard at least once a month and pick fresh fruit; June is for strawberries, July is for blueberries, August is for peaches, and September is for apples.

8. Ice cream!!-- I realize this is a frozen treat but I felt like it deserved it's own category.  Even though I have started eczema flare- up on my neck and chest whenever I eat ice cream, I just can not say no to a tasty ice cream cone.  Especially if I see Maine Black Bear on the menu!

9. Fried dough-- While I wouldn't mind eating fried dough at other times throughout the year we usually only find fried dough at fairs and amusement parks that crop up here over the summer.

10.  Strawberry Shortcake-- Really I am a fan of just about any dessert but in the summer there is something about fresh fruit desserts that just seem to hit the spot and my all time favorite is strawberry shortcake; the cake can be an actual shortcake, a biscuit, a pound cake, angel food cake... I don't really care but fresh strawberries and some cool whip on top make all the difference to me!

  4. Oh, my gosh...I wish your posts were edible. I wish it every time I visit!! I need that strawberry-asparagus recipe. Have seen it before on your blog. Can't remember if you have shared the recipe or not. Have never prepared asparagus but would like to try. Need to know how you grill it, too!!

And fried dough? Not funnel cakes, right? This sounds like something I need to try, too. Apparently, I have lived a somewhat sheltered life!!

Love the seafood. Now that's something I have eaten and enjoyed. Would love to try a lobster roll. Give me all the clam chowder and clam cakes. Thanks for joining me!!

    1. LOL. Thank you! I found the recipe for the strawberry-asparagus salad on line (https://www.myslicesoflife.com/2021/07/home-tour.html). We use a grill basket and just lightly spritz the asparagus with some cooking oil, salt, pepper, sometimes garlic then grill until they turn bright green.

Fried dough is not a funnel cake (funny enough I can not stand funnel cakes!); they are delicious and usually topped with powdered sugar or even cinnamon/ sugar. Have you ever had a beignet? Fried dough is like that but usually a large flatish oval shape-- about the size of a dinner paper plate that it's usually served on.

  5. Fried dough. Now that's intriquing! Is that a donut? A funnel cake? I'm not sure..but fried and dough together has to be delish! That photo of fruit salad looks amazing!!

    1. It is neither a donut or a funnel cake... have you ever had beignets? They're like that only much larger.

  7. Yum, yum! Food seems to taste much better in the summer.
Clam cakes or chowder isn't a big thing over here but I do like the sound of the clam chowder.
Ice cream is the best food of the summer though. x

  11. Oh, pasta salads are so delicious! In fact, most of these foods are great. I'm so sorry you get eczema from ice cream, so I totally understand you eat it anyway. Thank you for introducing me to 10 on the 10th. #MMBC
