Whitefield, New Hampshire Hike #2: Arethusa, Bemis, and Coliseum Falls

As soon as we finished at Mount Willard (which I wrote about yesterday) we hopped in the car and drove about 15 minutes or so down the road to Arethusa falls.

We figured we were warmed up and the short hike to the falls would be no big deal... but our thighs are not used to mountain hiking and were burning.  Still we made it to the falls in under an hour and boy was it pretty!

This trail was well marked and a bit crowded as far as hiking trails go, but not overly so.

Arethusa falls:

On the way back to the car we took the side trail to Bemis falls; it was pretty steep with not much but rocks and tree roots to cling to.

Looking up you can't even tell there is a trail (but it is marked with paint)

a gentle cascade

Next up was Coliseum falls:

We stopped at the snack shop near the parking lot and purchased a bag of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies then we headed to a nearby store to buy some other snacks and head back to the hotel...  Just as the sun came out.

It was nearly 2 o'clock and we decided to watch a movie and eat snacks in place of lunch... but I ended up falling asleep just moments after the movie started. 4 hours of hiking wiped me out.

We dressed for dinner and headed back to the Mountain View Grand's Tavern for dinner.  I got pizza and my husband ordered their burger; both were fabulous and we once again got dessert to go.  I ordered the flourless chocolate torte this time and my husband got another peanut butter pie slice.  We ate them for dessert in our room while watching yet another movie.

    1. We've hiked for a few hours at a time before but I was really not used to hiking for so long on such rugged terrain. The nap felt great!

    1. What a fun way to plan a vacation! There are so many falls and flumes in this area; a few you can spot right from the road even.
