Shows I've Been Watching

I have  been STRUGGLING to find some really good shows to watch.  You know the ones that you end up binging through and then feel sad when they're over because you just enjoyed it so much.  My favorites tend to be shows like Modern Family, Parenthood, Brothers & Sisters, Schitt's Creek, or even Cougar Town.  My husband and I really like shows like Good Girls, The Blacklist, and Halt & Catch fire.  We did add Discoery+ to our streaming channels this month and have been talking about canceling Netflix-- does anyone else feel like they just haven't been coming out with any good shows lately?

If you have any suggestions please feel free to mention them in the comments! I'd love some new ideas.

1. The Crew (Netflix)-- My husband, son, and I really enjoyed this Kevin Heart show.  It was funny and a bit sweet at times.  But with just one season out we were done it in no time.

2. Nomadland (Hulu)-- I had read this book a few years ago at the suggestion of my sister and didn't realize it had been into a movie until I saw another blogger reviewing it.  I decided to watch it one night and while I much preferred the book I think it is still an eye opening "documentary" of sorts. Though I did question if anyone could make real sense of the movie if they hadn't read the book before as the book goes into much more detail.  I'd recommend the book over the movie any day of the week as the movie was so darn depressing.

3. Kodachrome (Netflix)-- I thought this was a pretty good movie.  When Matt's father's nurse shows up and asks him to accompany them on a cross country trip he's reluctant to do so since him and his father have been estranged for nearly 10 years. Matt's father is a famous photographer and he has a few rolls of Kodachrome film he needs developed before the last remaining lab closes.  His father is also fighting end stage cancer and sees this as his last big trip. They fight, they make up, they learn more about one another.

4. Chef (Netflix)-- Chef Casper is sick of preparing the same boring dishes day after day.  His ex-wife keeps trying to get him to buy a food truck and after one particularly awful night at the restaurant he reluctantly decides to give it a try. With the help of some friends and his son he fixes up a food truck in Miami and drives it across country having the time of his life cooking up specialty menus using local foods. I really enjoyed this movie and some of the foods he made looked SO good!

5. Country Comfort (Netflix)-- I have yet to make it past the premier on this one.  The synopsis of the show had great promise but something about the premier put me off and I really don't know what... when singer/songwriter gets stranded and knocks on the nearest ranch door for a phone she ends up hiding out with the family through a terrible storm and gets hired on as their new nanny.

6. Alaska the Last Frontier (Discovery+)-- We have been following the Kiltcher family for years and anxiously started watching the latest season.

7. Homestead Rescue (Discovery+)-- My husband loves this show that has the Raney family going around helping struggling homesteaders across the country get up and running living off the land and off grid.  Only problem is my husband often thinks this somehow looks appealing and wants to give it a shot.

8. The Secret Life of Bees (Hulu)-- I read this book years ago and thought they did a pretty good job bringing this story to life.

9.  The Mindy Project (Hulu)-- I'm actually not sure if I like this show or not... it's got a cute premise.  Mindy, a doctor that has recently joined a local practice is trying to change her dating behavior in the hopes of finding true love.

10. Thunder Force (Netflix)-- This movie seemed pretty promising at first and made me chuckle in a few parts but then it just got rather bizarre and cheesy-- save yourself from watching this one.  You aren't missing anything by skipping it.

11. Mighty Ducks (Disney+)-- My husband and I both grew up watching the Mighty Ducks movies so we wanted to see what the new series on Disney would be like.  So far we think it's pretty cute.

  2. I switch between subscribing to Netflix and Disney+.
I haven't heard of a lot of these but did spot The Mighty Ducks series yesterday. I will be watching it. I loved the films and I'm so glad Gordon Bombay is back. x

  3. I've been struggling to find shows too. That's why I've been watching so many documentaries lately. My parents suggested we watch Nomadland too, but they hadn't read the book. I might suggest the book to my mom because she liked the movie and since she loves reading, she might like to book too.

    1. I think the book dives so much deeper into this nomadic existence where the book doesn't really say much about it. The author actually joined these people on the road for I think it was a year.

  4. A friend just reviewed Nomadland and said it was one of the most depressing movies she's watched. I have not read the book but for sure will skip the movie now.

    1. Like what?! I feel like I have watched ALL the shows and just can't find anything else to settle into. I've even debated about dropping Netflix entirely.

  6. We're going to start Mighty Ducks soon... those movies were my favorite when I was a kid! I don't know if you've ever watched New Girl, but B and I are flying through it. It's so cute and really funny and each episode is only 23ish minutes so you can squeeze them in easily here and there. It's 7 seasons so it'll satisfy you for a while, and it's already done so you don't have to wait for more seasons to come out. I know I hate starting something that's only one or two seasons in and then we have to wait!

    1. It is super cute! I don't think I've watched all 7 seasons though so that would be a good one to go back to and pick up where I left off. I feel the same way about watching shows and waiting for seasons!!

  7. I didn't know that the Secret Lives of Bees had been made into a film. Loved the book, so nice to know the film doesn't let you down. We dropped Disney, with the thought of picking it up again later in the year. I think I might try Nomadland as a book first then the film. Sounds intriguing.#mmbc

    1. I would definitely recommend reading the book first. I felt like I wouldn't have known what was going on sometimes without that background knowledge.
