Three Things Tuesday

I have seen this format on quite a few other blogs and thought it would be perfect for a quick little post today when I had nothing much pressing I felt like sharing.  Here are three things about us all and our lives lately.

1. Evan's ear sound had been determined to be a biological thing and just a fluke-- apparently there is a vein that runs up the neck and then splits between the right and left ear and the one on his left side is smaller than the one on his right which causes the blood to pump harder on his left side.  We'll have another MRI and hearing test in a year to make sure nothing has changed but none of the doctors involved in his case see any cause for concern.

2.  Evan has recently begun displaying an interest in learning about the brain and psychology-- having been a psych. major myself in college I am excited and we have decided to plan a rather unusual 8th grade  year where I will in fact be teaching psychology!

3. He is now officially taller than me; I knew it was coming as he passed my shoe size long ago but it's rather weird to now be the shortest person in the house when I used to be second tallest!

1.  Alec is LOVING school-- he's been killing it too making high honors even with all his honors level courses, helping out seniors with their senior cooking projects (which works in extra kitchen time for him during shop cycle), and even though he's a Freshman it looks like he might finish up the Sophomore math requirement this year too!  So proud of how well this kid has adjusted between homeschooling/ public schooling/ and hybrid schooling.

2.  He has decided to give track and field a try this year.  I don't think Alec has participated in any team sports since he played soccer way back in Kindergarten or 1st grade.  He is quite anxious to see what the different events include and I am sure that with his long legs and lanky build he'll probably be good at it too.

3. Despite his heavy workload this year Alec has continued to read and devour books at an amazing pace!  It's not unusual for him to have a book or two tucked into his backpack or waiting on the table with his notebooks when he's doing virtual school.  He manages to sneak in all sorts of reading time throughout the day.

1. Ian has applied to (and been accepted by) our local community college to take a few non-credit courses this coming fall.  My hope is that this will be a good transition for him from homeschooling to college.  He has never shown much interest in furthering his education but lately has been talking about taking business courses and maybe even getting a degree since he really does want to open his own construction business one day.

2.  Ian has spent all winter re-doing our old 1994(5?) jet ski.  He redid much of the fiberglass hull, repainted the whole thing, replaced the non- skid pads, recovered the seat and best of all he's done most of it with minimal help and mainly watching YouTube videos whenever he gets stuck.  All the skills he's been exhibiting have just blown us away.

3. After getting his license this past winter and now having his own car he really is becoming quite independent and most days as soon as he's finished up his schoolwork he takes off to work on some sort of project (like the jet ski). He enjoys working hard doing things like using the excavator or loader to help his uncle or grandfather, welding/ working on/ repairing his four wheeler, rebuilding an old skid steer with his grandfather, and the list goes on and on.

1.  I have been battling, what I am pretty sure is, a bad case of tennis elbow.  I am toying with taking a long blogging break because computer work aggravates it so much and the pain is now also in my neck and wrist.  I'm hoping my new elbow brace and vertical mouse will help and I am also making sure to only type when sitting properly at a desk.

2. I have been hard at work preparing all the schoolwork for next year for both Evan and Ian while also trying to finish up what we have left to work through for this year.

3.  My husband is pretty much working 7 days a week morning until night.  His work has been crazy busy, which I know is probably a good thing and we are so fortunate, but I am trying to get him to take at least a little time off here and there to rest and also to spend time with us.  He's got a buyer lined up for his hydroelectric plant so if that sale goes through he'll have one less thing on his plate-- fingers crossed!

  2. Enjoyed catching up with you all in this post. Teaching psychology sounds cool! I'm waiting for my 13 year old to be taller than me. His voice seems to be changing, so his height likely will soon too!

  3. I'm sorry you are having tennis elbow. My mom has carpel tunnel pretty bad in one of her arms, and she wears a brace while she works at the computer, and it seems to help. Not sure if there are any braces out there for tennis elbow, but just thought I'd throw out the suggestion in case it helps! Hopefully you'll feel better soon! I enjoyed catching up with you and your boys!

    1. I did find one that I just ordered on Amazon so hopefully that will help. Honestly, just figuring out it was the computer and being more mindful of how often I sit in front of it at one time and being aware of my posture has really helped. I thought I had pulled a muscle stacking wood!

  4. It is strange when our kids end up taller than us. My youngest is nearly the same height as me and is still growing, it won't be long until I am the shortest in the house. lol
It sounds like Alec really is smashing school! Go him and good luck to Ian with community college.
I hope your elbow is feeling better soon. x

    1. Thank you for all the well wishes! I suppose all my siblings and I are much taller than my mom so it does seem to be the way things go.

  5. I too find it so weird being the shortest in the house. Even when I wear heels my 14 year old is still taller!!
Sorry to hear about your tennis elbow, computer work can definitely make it worse, but hope you'll still do a little bit of blogging and share your beautiful pictures!

    1. Aw, thank you! I know that I wouldn't be able to stop blogging completely but thought maybe just sticking to an every other day schedule for a bit might help. We'll see... It is feel a bit better than it was even with me just reading up on stretching/ massaging/ and exercises to try that I've been implementing.

  8. The boys are doing so well! My oldest is planning to take a ap psychology class next year. He is showing interest in psychology and nuclear engineering right now. He is also talking about school sports which he hasn't done since younger grades too. I hope you can rest your tennis elbow without disappearing completedly from your blog. I love visiting and hearing about what you all are doing.
