Our Fairy Garden Cupcakes

Welcome to the March Pinterest Challenge! The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate us to not just pin, but to make it happen!

When I saw that this month's Pinterest Challenge theme was Magical March I asked my son if he'd help me make either a fairy garden cake or cupcakes.

We ultimately settled on cupcakes and thought we'd do something similar to this pin.  Not having much experience at all with fondant we weren't sure how it was going to go but we were up for the challenge.

He baked up a batch of vanilla cupcakes.

Once cooled I whipped up a batch of buttercream frosting and tinted it green.  I had planned to use a grass piping tip to pipe green grass on our cupcakes but found I didn't have a grass tip!  I tried out a few other tips before settling on using a traditional start tip and piping my frosting on the same as always.

Alec whipped up some homemade fondant and set to work making mushrooms, flowers, ladybugs, bees, and dragon flies.  It was much harder than we thought working in miniature but I do think they turned out so sweet!

We decided to add a bumble bee to our rose

    1. Nope, I will not eat it.. yucky marshmallows... but it was fun to play with and easier for making 3-D shapes than frosting that's for sure!

    1. My son sculpts a lot of different things using polymer clay so I knew he would be perfect for this (plus he's a culinary student now so it combines two of his talents!).

  13. You both did a wonderful job making these fairy tale themed cupcakes! I've never worked with fondant and it must have been a challenge to dye it and make miniature decorations, but they are all so cute! Bravo!
