Let's Get Cozy; Embracing Hygge

This month's Not Just a Mom party is all about getting cozy.  There is nothing I enjoy more this time of year than snuggling up in our cozy home after having been out hiking or snowshoeing.  Our temps here can get quite chilly and there is nothing quite like walking into a warm, welcoming home.

Over the last several years, I have read a few books on Hygge; the Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of comfort and coziness.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that I already embraced so many of the small things you can do to bring a feeling of Hygge into your home.

There is nothing better than curling up in front of of a cozy fireplace preferably with fuzzy slippers or warm thick socks.

I tend to leave lots of fuzzy and soft throw blankets all around the house and change out my bedding for the season too; adding warmer blankets and soft sheets.

In winter we love to cook up scrumptious soups, delicious baked goods, creamy casseroles, and all those favorite comfort foods. I just love cooking up a soup, stew, or roast in the crock pot and having the whole house fill up with the smell of our dinner.

Drinking hot cocoa while curled up with a good book in my comfiest clothes is another favorite way to get cozy.

When we built our house we installed dimmer switches on just about every single light one and we often keep the overhead lights dimmed; that combined with some scented candles in homey scents like cinnamon and vanilla create a more relaxed feel.

We tend to stick closer to home in the cold months eating dinner together most every night and then watching movies/ TV together or playing games.

We have a woodstove in our basement that heats up the floors on our first floor and this adds to that cozy, warm vibe I crave all winter long.

How do you like to get cozy?  I hope you'll link up with us! Here are all the topics we'll be covering this year.  Join us the second Tuesday of each month.

  2. That looks perfect! I would like to join you by that fire. Our homes are not built for cold weather and so, even though winter is short here, the evenings at home can be chilly! #MMBC

    1. Oh see, I could totally do without winter and enjoy these comforts just fine in fall but having these comforts does help make winter more enjoyable.
