Holiday Home Tour 2020

I didn't intentionally decorate the house a bit different than normal this year but that is what ended up happening.  Between finding a new home for our tree under the balcony and having downsized a bunch of our decorations from last year I was forced to change things up.

I just have a few little touches in each room now and it makes decorating and packing away the decorations so much easier.

In our dining room I just put out our standard tablecloth with the winter mason jars the boys and I made several years ago.  I added a cute little elf to the top of my basket holder.

I put together a candle and potpourri centerpiece for the formal living room's coffee table.

We put our village on a card table near the fireplace this year.  It's the first time we used the card table for our village and we have plans to not only add a few more pieces to the village but to build a whole Styrofoam base for it for next year (Ian suggested this as a project he could tackle and I love the idea).

The mantle stayed the same as the past few years and I do just love how classic and simple it is.

Just kiddy corner to the fireplace and card table we placed our tree under the balcony this year instead of in front of our windows.  It fits rather perfectly between the two doorways.

I had a blogger ask me how I got those ribbons cascading down the tree to stay in place so I wanted to give a quick little look at that.  First I loop three really long ribbons over the top of the tree and all the way down to the bottom.

Then I make sure they are somewhat evenly spaced around it, like this:

Then since our tree topper has a handy little clip I use that to hold them all in place around the center of the tree.

Then I fuss a bit with the ribbons until I'm happy with how they look.

On the balcony over the tree I strung some garland and made a few matching bows with ribbon I had left from our tree.

I wasn't really sure what to do with my dwindling collection of snowmen and thought that a few of them looked rather adorable on my new plant stand.

We have one last talking plush Santa left over that I just can't part with. He reads The Night Before Christmas Story and I like to think that maybe someday my grandkids will get a kick out of him.  He sits in a corner of the room on top of an old popcorn tin.

I really loved how the front entryway turned out.  I added a lit wreath above the bench along with a cozy blanket & pillow on top, with a set of light up snowmen alongside.

I put my grandmother's sled front and center near our stairs and wrapped our garland a bit differently this year using some pretty ribbons/ bows to hold it in place.

I have kept my old childhood stocking for years since my grandmother  (or maybe it was my great grandmother?) made it for me but I never actually put it out before and realized I really should.  I found the perfect spot on the inside of our front door.

Back in the formal living room I put out a few snowmen and assorted Christmas bric-a-brac on our bookcase and end tables.

The slate tile my sister painted looks great by the glow of the glittery candles.

In our kitchen I put out a cute little window sign with a fun little Santa rug in front of the sink.

  10. Very festive, Joanne! I love your grandmother's sled and the garland with lights on the stairwell - so pretty! Your mantel and village are favorites as well. It's nice to see your family want to get in on the decor for future village ideas. I love that. Christmas is so special.
Just an fyi....I had a little trouble getting your website to respond to the links for various things - the menu headers and posts beyond the truncated beginnings. I finally went to your Facebook page to get to this post in its entirety. Not sure if it was on my end or not, but I haven't had any trouble with other blogs this morning.
    Merry Christmas, Joanne!

    1. Thank you, Rita. I was so touched to end up with her sled. She was quite the artist but I have so few of her works of art. I have heard that about my links and honestly I just don't know what is going on with them. They give me a hard time too-- but only sometimes!

  11. Your grandmother's sled is absolutely gorgeous. I love that you have that. It looks so nice by the stairs. And your childhood stocking... how special that your grandmother made that! I love how sentimental all of your decor is. My mom and dad still hang my childhood stocking every year, but they did pass on all of my ornaments. I love pulling them out each year and hanging them on the tree.

    1. I have all my ornaments from my parents from when I was a kid too and it's a tradition we have kept alive with our children. I hope they get as excited as I do looking through them each year.

  12. So many cute Christmas decorations! Loving your coffee table potpourri piece and the snowmen on the ladder are adorable! Also really loving your plant stand and the snowmen are perfect for that area. Wish I could use that fluffy material with my small village, but a couple of years ago one of our cats got their claws stuck in it and almost pulled everything off, so I am using a white table runner instead.

    1. When we had a cat I couldn't even put up my village; he used to bat all the people around at night and I'd find them headless or armless by morning!

  13. My mom had that village too. I love how many memories this brings me back to. You did a great job decorating your house. I love the garland around the banisters. I still have my childhood stocking. I should put it up as well!

  21. I am not sure I've seen much of your house before. Love the soothing wall color. Very pretty. Your bannister and mantel both look like something out of a home magazine. Beautiful. I like using snow men to decorate because I can leave them up a little longer. The bits of Christmas you have here and there give the whole house a festive feeling. Thanks for sharing the ribbon trick. I can do that!!

  24. Joanne, you have a beautiful home! I love all the festive decorations. Old stockings are so cool. I have one that is at least 50 years old and it looks like Santa's long underwear instead of a sock! We kept decorations minimal this year. Only the living room and the front porch are decorated. But we spend most of our time in the living room anyway. Thanks for sharing your lovely home and linking with me!
