Painting a Floral Slate for Summer

Today I am linking up with some fellow bloggers to bring you some summer themed crafting ideas.

When I was working in my garden I realized that quite a few of my garden decorations had seen better days and needed to go.  I remembered I had a blank slate in my stash of goodies and I wanted to paint something to hang in the garden.

It took me a good week or so to decide what I wanted-- a large flower set off to the side.  I lightly drew a sketch in pencil and set out all my painting supplies.

At first I started painting my flower white but I didn't like how it was turning out when I saw this beautiful teal color in the paint bin.  As soon as I started painting over the petals I just knew I was going to love it!

I added some lights and darks to each petal and to the center of the flower before setting it aside to dry.

After a couple of days when I knew it was good and dry I sprayed a few coats of a UV sealer over the slate.

Then I hung it on my hanger.  I just love it!  This hanger is located right near the end of our walkway to the front door and I think this is such a cheery welcome to our home.

Make sure to stop by and check out what my other co-hosts are sharing today.

    1. Thank you! I took art lessons for years (I think from the time I was 6 until I reached high school).. and even studied art in college hoping to be a children's art teacher.

  15. That is a bright, cheery welcome to your home. Reading your reply to the comment above...I have a degree in Art Ed but never taught art! Turned into a librarian instead. Love that you put your talents to good use around your home. Where did you find a slate with the hanger? Just a darling project.

Do you guys have a certain day you do these link-ups? I would like to join you.

    1. I was hired to be a school librarian... but the school ended up closing just one week before we were due to start! I was so looking forward to it too. While I was heart broken at the time it was a huge step in leading me towards homeshcooling. I honestly can't remember where I found the slate... an old craft store.

These craft link-ups are run by Beverly at Across the Boulevard; a theme is picked each month and are for the second Monday of the month. (There are more guidelines than that but that's it in a nutshell).
