Alec's Room Re-do

We knew we were going to be replacing Alec's flooring with some laminate plank flooring just like his brothers' two rooms but first Alec really wanted his room painted.  I agreed since it only made sense to paint first and we already knew we were going to get rid a few shelves and move his wall decorations around; which meant spackling holes anyway.

I told him the first step was to pack up as much of his room as he could in boxes and clear it out of the way.  Alec tends to be a bit of a pack rat and had "stuff" everywhere.

He wanted to clear out his animal zoo and get rid of a bunch of his stuffed animals.  He ended up getting rid of lots of other things too and his room was already looking so different and grown up before we even painted.

We took down all the wall hangings and I taught him to spackle.  We sanded that once dry and then began taping off the trim.

He picked out a pretty aqua color and I figured it would take a good 2 coats of paint.

Once we were done painting we moved his furniture enough that he could sleep and use his room until we were ready to tackle the flooring later that same week.

Bright and early Saturday morning we cleared the room out completely and began ripping up the rug.  Alec's room is right over the garage so we taped up the rolls of carpet and padding then toseed them right out the window.

Then we began prying up the staples and carpet pad remnants that were left behind.  We swept the whole floor clean before laying out the laminate pad.

Once we had the pad down in the entire room we began laying out the planks. It moved fairly quickly as his room has simple straight walls. Our final step was to add some 1/4 round trim to cover where the planks met the existing trim.

We moved his furniture back in and then he picked out a new area rug.

It is such a bright and cheery room now and so much easier to keep clean too.

  1. Fun to see the progression. I love green but this blue is so restful. Makes the room more like a retreat. The wood floors are so rich! I wish we could put them in upstairs in our master bedroom. I clean the carpets regularly but still feel like they are yucky. So impressed with the hard work Alec put into his re-do. Great kids, great mom.

    1. I thought it had a very spa/ zen- like feel to it too with the lighter color. He worked so hard without a single complaint to help us achieve this.

  4. I love the new wall color... it really brightened up the room! And those floors are so great!! I see so many people transitioning from carpet to wood floors in the bedrooms and part of me would love to do that, too.

  5. You did such a great job! And how great that Alec did most of the work himself. The end result looks wonderful! Thanks for linking up with me.
