Friday Favorites: Shelter in Place Week #5

Ian and Alec officially finished up their school year this week. I honestly don't know how we finished this early since we never started our lessons until October but they completed all their books.  I have warned them I still expect them to read and to work on Duolingo but I sort of expect that year round anyway.

Evan came knocking on my door at 6:30 in the morning on Friday wanting to start school.  I told him to get started on math and I'd be down. We're fishing up the last book in his Key to Percents book; a series we just LOVE for middle school.  My boys don't often ask to work on their schooling but I love it when they do!

Alec was finally feeling better and while he still stayed in bed and in his room all day he ate more, did get up long enough to take a shower, and we stripped and re-made his bed.  Ian headed out to work for the morning changing the oil in his grandmother's lawn mower. He came home with some donuts for everyone and then headed out to ride his 4 wheeler.  After lunch he headed out to work for the afternoon. I worked like crazy to finish up my latest book.

Ian headed off to work bright and early on Saturday and Alec and I set to work making a dessert for Easter.  We made this Brownie Cheesecake No-Bake from Marilyn's Treats.  It looked delicious (though we did add about a cup of Oreo bits to 1/2 the cheesecake for the top layer since we had so many left over from making our crust). I got so caught up in reading my newest book in it's entirety: In an Instant, that I didn't accomplish much of anything else!  Ian rode his four wheeler after working and I did run to the grocery store just to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables and other necessities like milk.

Easter morning (Sunday) both my husband and Ian headed off to work.  Alec and Evan started their day off by opening their Easter gifts ( I couldn't find our baskets).  After breakfast they headed outside for a bit.   I began reading a new book, did a few loads of laundry, and got our roast going in the crock pot.  Ian and my husband were home by lunch.  My mother in law stopped by just long enough to drop off some chocolate bunnies for the kids and then Ian and Ben left to go ride their four wheelers and dirt bikes.  We ended our night watching The Core; we really liked the movie but the graphics had us in stitches.

It was pouring Monday! The wind was shaking the house and the rain was falling sideways against the house in a way that ended up making many of our windows leak.  Thankfully we don't have storms like this often.  Ian finished a game of Monopoly he had started over the weekend and it really was the perfect day for a board game since we kept having our power go out.

We woke to sunny skies on Tuesday.  I convinced the boys to finish their schoolwork in record time so we could go on a hike/ walk.  It had been a full week since we had done that and I was missing it so much.  Since there were so many trees down everywhere we decided to just walk our land and do a trail sweep.  Well, it took forever as Ian used the chainsaw on tree after tree that had fallen.  We broke for lunch and then headed out to finish up. We got our second Misfit Markets box in and I set to work making parmesan crusted zucchini to go with our spaghetti dinner.

We finished our school day Wednesday with a quick round of bingo and I was so pleasantly surprised to find that my boys knew quite a bit about all the world monuments.

Ian finished up another chemistry experiment.  Even though he's done all of his bookwork I asked him to at least tackle one experiment a week since this box of chemicals was quite expensive. He learned a bit more about Boyle's Law.

The pressure from the books sends the water back down the stem of the pipette

My mother in law picked up Alec and they headed out to get McDonald's take out for each of the boys lunch.  My kids have not eaten at a McDonald's in years and we had to look up their menu online so they could decide what they wanted.  After lunch we went for a walk to get the mail. The sun was shining even it was still quite chilly out. We saw a bluebird!

Thursday we began school by reading two more chapters in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (we're re-reading this series in it's entirety again).  The boys finished up their meager schoolwork and Evan and I headed out for a brisk walk in the snow flurries to drop some bills in the mail.  Once home all three boys did some cleaning and then after lunch Alec and I settled in to mix up some mango scones with lime glaze; a recipe we cobbled together for an upcoming recipe post.  They were delicious!!

  1. We are probably going to finish early this year as well, and I'm sure it's because all the "extras" that have made school scheduling a challenge have been magically deleted from our lives, so we just get down to business a lot sooner. This is my last year of homeschooling, so it will feel a little surreal to be "done," and to have it be REALLY "done."

    1. I think that's what helped us too. I bet it is going to feel pretty weird to be completely and really "done."

  2. It looks like you are making the best of this shelter in place. We are pretty much too and in fact, I am not hating it. Homeschool is still a struggle at times but only because Ellie has attention issues in a normal climate. She is feeling a little bit of our anxiety which is making it harder for her to concentrate. I get that completely. :)

    1. I've been really surprised that my boys don't seem to be picking up on mine at all; which I am so glad for!

  3. I have never seen that particular bingo: I will have to check it out. I have several of them from my days of teaching. That cake sure looks delicious! Boys will be finishing school on May 8 but I am hoping to keep some math going this summer.

    1. We have quite a few versions of Bingo too! Our schools don't end until the end of June up here but we typically end sometime in May.

  4. The cheesecake and scones look wonderful! We had some really bad weather this week too, but thankfully nothing here leaked (it has in the past though). Enjoy your weekend!

    1. They were delicious! Though, I keep cautioning the boys that we can't keep eating this way.

  5. We had a crazy storm here Monday as well and fortunately didn't lose power. My kids' school doesn't end until the end of June. I am happy that they still have online/distance learning since it gives them some structure to their day! I'm not sure what they would do all day while my husband and I work! That cheesecake looks delicious! Have a great weekend!

    1. Our local schools don't end until mid/late June either but somehow we usually are finishing up towards the beginning of May. I just have to figure we're done so early this year because we haven't been taking any time/days off for field trips since February. I hope you have a great weekend too.

  6. I am amazed that you finished the school year already for the boys. We had a bad storm here to with a lot of rain and windy. Our lamp post top blew off and we had to get it repaired by a handyman but thankful that was the only damage we had. The cake looks amazing and I bet tasted delicious.
Hope you have a nice weekend. :)

  9. Your cheesecake and scones look fantastic! And we have been playing so many board games with our boys during this time. We actually don't have Monopoly but they're starting to get to an age where they might be able to play it.

    1. My boys battle it out (without my help because I can not stand Monopoly!) and I think they must have played at least 4 different and complete rounds of the game. This week they had me laughing from the other room though as one was starting to realize he was going to "die" and be out of the game so he grabbed a slip of paper and tried drafting up a will to leave all his property to another player.

  10. Those Monopoly games can go on forever can't they? We prefer to play it on the Xbox - no moving pieces for the baby to get into! I bet it feels good to know school is over for a while! We also had some bad storms on Sunday, actually we were under a tornado warning for a few hours! Thankfully we didn't see any tornadoes, but the big town an hour away had one destroy part of their town.

    1. They sure can! I have been hearing so many stories of tornadoes and tornado warnings. So glad you were OK!

  11. Oooh, the cake looks yummy! One good thing out of this pandemic is that we're all playing more games! Blokus, Uno, and Connect 4 are favorites around here. One of my adult daughters recently tossed our Monopoly because we were missing pieces. : /

  12. It sounds like your family is getting a good mix of work and play! I feel like McDonald's is a good choice in such a time as this, and extra special when it's a trip with Grandma.
