Making Gourmet Caramel Apples at Home

I have been wanting to try making our own caramel apples for quite some time now but it's just one of those things that we kept forgetting about or putting off for another day until the next thing you know a year or so went by and we still hadn't made any.

I decided this was the year and when I found a quick and easy tutorial for making caramel apples on A Grace Full Life I immediately went out and bought our supplies.
  • Honey crisp apples
  • caramels
  • milk
  • chocolate melts
  • candy bars (we used Butterfingers)
My boys wanted to embellish our apples with crushed candies, melted chocolate, and we even talked about buying Oreos (why we decided not to I really can't remember!)

We were only make 3 apples so I knew we didn't need a very big pan to put them in when we were done.  We pulled out an 8x8 Pyrex dish and sprayed it liberally with non-stick spray then set it aside.

We had some sticks left from when we made our Jolly Rancher candy apples last year and we put one stick in each apple making sure they were nice and secure.

We used a small saucepan and heated the unwrapped caramels and milk over low to medium heat until melted smooth.

Meanwhile we crushed the Butterfinger candies and put them on a plate.

We had some green chocolate melts and after melting them to drizzle over the caramel apples, Evan decided to see what it would taste like to make a chocolate covered apple instead.  He dunked his apple in the dish of melted chocolate; rotating it to cover as much as he could

He then rolled his chocolate apple in the Butterfinger candies and set it aside to harden.

When we cut into the apple a few hours later most of the chocolate did stick to the apple and he told me it tasted amazing!

Once we had the caramel all melted and we let it cool for a few minutes and then dunked our apples in the caramel; using a spoon to make sure we coated the entire apple.  While the caramel was still warm we dipped our apples in the candy and drizzled chocolate over the top of them.

They were so delicious that we forgot to take any other photos!  But I assure they looked amazing and tasted fantastic.

We can't wait to make more and we're already brainstorming all sorts of topping ideas to roll our caramel apples in when we're done.  What's your favorite kind of candy/ caramel apple?

    1. Really?! I think I grew up eating them. I just love caramel apples but try to limit myself to just a couple each fall.

  3. That looks like a lot of fun. I don't have any little ones around and I do have dental veneers, so I'd probably just cut up my apples and drizzle the caramel over them. My son and I were talking about different ways to prepare apples.
