Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves-- Loon Mountain Trip Part #2

As soon as we checked into our hotel and grabbed a delicious sandwich from the White Mountain Bagel company we decided to head over and check out the Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves.

Never having been there we weren't sure what to expect.

We bought our passes and started right onto the trail. Much of it is wooden stairs and walkways suspended over the river and wet ground surrounding the lost river gorge.

Periodically along the trail there are caves to explore.  Two of the caves were shut down while we were there because the water table was high and they were flooded.  Even the ones we did go inside often were cold and wet.  Spaces were tight and I'm not ashamed to admit I chickened out on going through a few of them after almost getting stuck on my hands and knees.  I was not about to lie down on my stomach and pull myself through like my husband and a few other brave souls did.

Looking up and out from inside one of the caves

Everywhere we went we heard the sounds of running water and saw some really amazing looking rock formations.  It's crazy to think how much has been carved away over time from the water.

Notice how this tree grew around the bridge/trail.  Many of the trees wrap around boulders and hand suspended in what looks like mid-air!

We checked out every little side trail and really enjoyed the views from atop the gorge.

My least favorite part was probably the suspension bridge that moved slightly and swayed with every step-- high above the gorge on the way out.

We spent about an hour exploring the gorge and caves.

We found a small nature trail that led out of the parking lot and decided to hike that too (it only took 15 minutes) but we saw that so much of the forest had burn marks and we later learned from our server at dinner that there was a HUGE forest fire not that long ago.

After hiking we headed back to the hotel for showers and changed before heading out to dinner.  We ended up eating at Gordi's Fish and Steak House.

After dinner we called it an early night and went to watch TV in our room.

It was the perfect first day of vacation.
