Friday Favorites-- Home Improvement Edition

We had a pretty quiet week at home.  All three boys have been fighting off summer colds (or perhaps a really bad allergy flare up?! It's hard to tell).  I didn't mind spending more time at home though as I got so much done around the house.

It was a beautiful, hot, sunny day on Friday and after a quick trip to the grocery store, I kicked myself and the younger two boys outside for the day.  Ian was at work for the whole day with his dad and grandfather and I spent much of my afternoon reading a book and relaxing by the lake. I did manage to get a bit of planting and gardening done before my mom stopped by to visit with us. Relaxing days like this are why we take a summer break from schooling.

Evan asked to go for a kayak ride on Saturday.  We spent part of our morning lazing around the lake.

My husband and I went out for a date night!  I wore my new Amazon top. We said to heck with the points and ordered whatever we wanted .  For me it was steak, stuffed shrimp and mashed potatoes.  We even split a Tollhouse pie sundae for dessert.

Alec made some brown bread on Sunday.  He was trying to make bread that tasted like what they serve at Outback Steakhouse and he came pretty darn close too.  While he was baking the rest of us worked on the yard finishing cleaning up all the gardens, raking the beach, putting in the dock and jet ski for the season. Evan even went swimming!

The boys and I headed out on Monday and got all our Father's day shopping done then I spent the afternoon painting our deck pillars.  I have been wanting to paint them for years but didn't think it would made much difference; they have been stained a rusty brown due to water runoff and we were told that paint wouldn't cover it.  WOW! What a difference.  I love how amazing they look!!

Tuesday Ian and I ran all sorts of errands in the rain and then I took all three boys to meet up with my mother in law at Dunkin Donuts.  We sat and talked and laughed for a good hour!

Later that afternoon Ian mowed the lawn (after the sun came out and it dried) while Alec made a father's day card after not finding any he liked at the store.

I woke to a beautiful misty lake on Wednesday.

After breakfast I had to take the cat to the vet's office for his annual check up; 16+ years and still going strong.  He cries so pitifully in his crate the whole way there but usually ends up purring for the vet and vet tech.  I thought it was so cute that he jumped right up and sat in their windowsill while waiting for the vet to come into the exam room.

Once home I painted the dock and since I had so much paint left over I decided to paint the front stoop too.  About half-way through I wasn't so sure I was going to like it but all finished with everything put back in place it is such an improvement over the old stained cement. Now to paint the front pillars and the trim around the door-- it will look like a whole new house!

Before

After

I made a few Father's day cards and a potato salad and still found time to sit out in the sun and read my book.  I have just a few chapters left in Where the Crawdads Sing!

We woke to rain again on Thursday and I was actually rather glad; we need the rain and I needed a break from painting.  I also woke with a scratchy sore throat and we decided to spend an easy day at home reading, blogging, playing video games and watching TV.

    1. I want to do another coat on the pillars and start on the front porch pillars plus I have two Adirondack chairs that need to be sanded and re-painted.. here's hoping the weather holds out.

  10. Those home improvements look great, it's amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do. I love that your son cared so much to make a Father's Day card. I wish my kitty behaved well at the vet. He just growls and hisses at everyone. They do the basics, and get him out as fast as they can.

    1. It really is amazing; I'm not sure why it was so amazing to me this time as I just love making improvements with paint. It's a struggle to catch the cat and get him to the vet but once there he is pretty sweet as can be and they just love him. At most he cries pitifully. Good thing too because the older he gets the more often he seems to need to go.
