Friday Favorites- The We We Went Snowshoeing

We had a lot of fun this week.  We tackled quite a bit of schoolwork and got a big box of new books for next year; it looks like we'll have a fun and busy school year to look forward to in the fall!  The boys and I spent lots of time outside this week.  We had some pretty nice weather and it was so nice to get out and enjoy it.

We went snowshoeing!  We have been waiting all winter to try snowshoeing.  We discovered a place near us that rents snowshoes and have been waiting for a snowy enough week to try it out.  We finally went on Friday with some friends of ours (who own their own snowshoes and have been before so they could lead/guide us).  We walked through the trails for over an hour and had a great time.  It's a fabulous workout and we had bright sunny weather that actually kept us toasty warm.  Before we even made it back to the center to drop off our snowshoes my oldest was price checking them on-line.

We stopped for our first and only Shamrock shakes of the season and the boys were thrilled we FINALLY made it to McDonald's. Sadly, they weren't as good as I remember and I ended up dumping more than 1/2 of mine down the drain.  I refused to waste that many calories on something I wasn't loving.

My husband and I took off for a date (ish) night; we went grocery shopping just the two of us late Friday night since I did not have time to go in the morning before meeting our friends for our hike (and I mistakenly thought we were meeting in the afternoon).  I love that he's always willing to jump in with any chores I leave unfinished and it's great that the boys are old enough to be left home alone because I can not imagine a whole family trip to the store.

We had a pretty quiet day at home on Saturday and I got so much done!! Laundry, cooking/ food prep, bills and taxes.. it was great!  I also got Ian to go to the pet store with me and we got a larger tank for our turtle.  He has grown so much.  It was a lot of work to switch everything over and get it all set up but I just love his new home.

I found time to scrapbook on Sunday!  I finished up another 5 pages from our Florida trip in 2017 an I'm closing in on finishing up that entire year of pages... next up 2018.

Monday we had beautiful sunny weather and the boys and I all got out of the house for a good 40 minute walk.  We're sticking to the paved and shoveled/plowed trails for now.

Alec tackled his first attempt at roll out sugar cookies this week and I'm proud to say he did them all 100% by himself; even cleaning up the dishes and kitchen when we he was done.  He made the cookies on Monday and frosted them on Tuesday.  Again making everything himself and cleaning up too!!  He watched a video on how to frost with royal icing and did an excellent job.

After he had been missing for a week and a half we assumed we had seen the last of our cat; but Monday night at 7:30pm he came waltzing in like it was perfectly normal.  He looks good too.  The kids were so happy to see him and showered him with lots of attention.

While I can't say finding cat prints on some of the cookies was a favorite it did give us all a good laugh (and don't worry we threw them away!).  Even at 17+ years that cat still manages to get into mischief.

Evan and I went for a good 40 minute walk along the river trail while Alec was at karate on Tuesday and I played around with some photography.

Ian spent the entire day at work with his grandfather making deliveries.  He was so excited to be going to work that he was up and ready before anyone else in the house.

I challenged the boys to make some tape and popsicle bridges on Thursday. I gave them each 25 popsicle sticks and 3 feet of tape and asked them to design a bridge.  We used the kitchen chairs and set them exactly two tiles away from one another. Evan's bridge ended up holding the most weight.

We had a short day of school on Thursday and we made a Kit Kat pie in honor of Pi day!

We met up with some friends of ours and walked the river trail for almost two full hours.  It was such  a warm and sunny day!  We even saw a pair of downy woodpeckers chasing each other through the trees.

It was another fabulous week!  I am just loving these hints of spring.

  1. Love these recap posts. Somewhere I have pictures of all of us snowshoeing back when our kids were all here at home. When the snow is deep and perfect for shoeing, you've just gotta go do it!

  3. Snowshoeing looks like so much fun! I have to give it a try sometime. Not this year, I hope. I am ready for spring! So glad your cat came back, even if he did ruin some of the cookies!

    1. It was a lot of fun and a bit easier than I thought it would be. We were pretty happy to see the cat come back and thankfully my son thought it was hilarious that he had a few cookies with cat prints.

  4. Ha, Love the cat pawprint cookie. That's totally something my 16 yr old son would do too. Your "date night" to the grocery store made me laugh. Sounds like me and my husband.

  6. How neat! I've always wanted to go snowshoeing... it's more my speed than skiing! Skiing scares the crap out of me every time we go!

    1. I broke my leg skiing when I was in the 4th grade and have never wanted to try again. Snowshoeing was much more my speed.

    1. Yeah he is really keeping us entertained lately. It's funny but for years it was like we had a stranger living in our basement since we'd only see him in passing and now that's he's so much older he's getting active and silly and is into everything.

  9. What a great week! The cookies turned out great (sans the footprints). Good for you to not waste calories on the shake if you weren't loving it. I'd be willing to bet the Kit-kat pie didn't meet the same fate, grins.
