Weekly Wrap- Up: The Week We Toured the Elms

We had a nice easy week of schooling and mixed in a bit of holiday fun.  The highlight of our week was our trip to the Newport mansion The Elms.  I have been wanting to see a Newport mansion all decorated for the holidays for a few years now and it did not disappoint!

We were heading out to a friend's house on Friday so we had a very light day of schooling planned.  Ian ended up getting called into work which shortened our day even more.  I was relieved that everyone got their math work done and most of the boys managed to get a bit of reading in; that's pretty much the only thing I hope to finish each day this Christmas season.  We had fun watching our friends make beeswax candles and the kids all played outside for a bit in the little dusting of snow we had gotten overnight.  In the evening we spent 2 hours helping my husband out at work and enjoyed a very late dinner.

Saturday Ian headed off to work with his grandfather and the younger boys and I helped my husband at work for just a bit.  In the afternoon I helped my husband at the woodworking shop and then we enjoyed a family movie night around the fire.  We watched Home Alone and part of Christmas with the Cranks.  We brought TV trays into the room and ate dinner together in front of the fire.

Ian headed to work on Sunday with his grandfather and the younger boys geared up and headed out to play for a good hour or so.  My husband and I worked on the basement cabinets some more and we've got the base all done... now to work on doors and drawers.

The boys did some schoolwork on Monday and surprised me by sitting down at the kitchen table a good 20 minutes before I had planned!  They whipped through their work, did their chores, and decided to start putting a new puzzle together.  Ian and I ran a few errands after lunch and we ended our evening binge watching several episodes of Nailed It Holiday.  It was hilarious!

We had a short day of school on Tuesday.  All three boys had finished up with their work before Alec's karate class so all we had to do once we arrived home was finish cleaning the upstairs.  Ian and I worked on his puzzle for awhile and then I helped Alec make some homemade eggnog.  We found a delicious recipe that didn't use raw eggs and yet tastes pretty much like the real thing.

We had nothing planned on Wednesday and Ian decided to whip up a batch of crepes.  He had never made them before and I wasn't sure how they would turn out but they were amazing!  He did a fabulous job with them.  After a late breakfast we settled in to some schoolwork.  The boys all worked on math, reading, and spelling/foreign language.  We cleaned a good part of the downstairs and worked on the puzzle some more. The younger two boys spent much of the day outside and I tossed a lasagna in the crock pot for dinner.

Thursday we headed out early to pick up my mom and we headed to Newport.   I have been wanting to see one of the mansions decorated for Christmas for years so I was thrilled we were finally going to get there during the month of December. We chose to tour the Elms since we had already toured the other two mansions during the regular season.  It was a wonderful day.  The house was beautiful and we learned all about the family that had this "summer cottage" built.   The decorations were just amazing!!  (Check back on Sunday for a picture filled post of our day!)  We had a delicious lunch afterwards at Four Brothers Pizzaria in Kingstown.

How was your week?

  1. That’s all we are working on getting in these next couple weeks too. I decided I want to enjoy all that this season offers. It goes too fast and the kids are growing so quickly. I want them to cherish and really remember this time.

Do your boys love Home Alone?? We do! But my 6yo boy was belly laughing this year at all the antics. All boy he is for sure!!

That basement cabinet looks great! I bet it is going to be gorgeous when it’s done. Is this something you are re-doing or is it one your husband has built from scratch?

I love that your boys started doing a puzzle together. So sweet! I want to pull out some puzzles for the family and I to do.

    That mansion!!!! WOW! Gorgeous!!!!!!!

What a great week! Hope you have a beautiful weekend too. :)

    1. My boys LOVE Home Alone! We watch it every year and each year they laugh like crazy. Did you know there are 4 movies in the series?! My boys have watched them all countless times but I'll only watch the first two with them.

The basement cabinet is brand new and something we've built from scratch using rough cut lumber. We have all the top cabinets done (except for lots and lots of finish sanding/ staining work). I can finally see how it will all work when it's finished buy I think it could be at least another year as we're now discussing making a butcher block counter top to go on it.

    1. It is mind blowing to think that they only used these mansions for 6-8 weeks in the summer after spending the equivalent of multi million dollars!!
