Love to Learn: Books About Niagara Falls
We're heading to Niagara falls for our family vacation later this year and I thought learning about the area would make a great mini geography lesson before we head out.
I had to be careful what books we read though since my youngest son does not want to see any pictures or photos of the falls until we're there to see them in person... which also meant we couldn't watch any movies about the falls either.
Since I understood where he was coming from we picked some books that covered the area and had fun reading together.
1. Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg: The story of the first woman to go over the falls in a barrel.
2. Wonders of America: Niagara Falls: An easy to read book about Niagara falls and the area around it.
3. Where is Niagara Falls? : A wonderful easy reading chapter book filled with facts and information about Niagara falls.
4. Niagara Falls; Nature's Wonder: Since this book did have photos of the falls, I just read aloud about the history of the two towns surrounding the falls.
5. Mirette & Bellini Cross Niagara Falls: Based on an actual story, this book tells the tales of a few daredevil acts that were performed over the Niagara falls gorge.
Do you ever use your family vacation plans to teach your children?

What a challenge to find books that don't show pictures. We've planned day trips with extended family for years to visit the local historic and science sites. It's amazing how much people miss seeing in their own backyards. When we are at a destination for another family event we are usually the ones headed out to see what is there and others bring the family and kids along to find out what we've discovered.
ReplyDeleteYeah we love to explore; around us or wherever we travel to for whatever reason.
DeleteI'm excited about your trip! Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteWe can not wait! We have a whole list of all the things we want to see and do.
DeleteFun! We visited Niagra on the fourth of July in 2010, and it was so packed, but gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYeah we heard summer can be quite crowded but we're hoping to be able to go more towards the off season.
