Love to Learn-- Industrial Revolution Mini Unit Ideas

We have been studying the Industrial Revolution in our homeschool over the past few months.  Typically when studying any time period in history we turn it into a mini unit.  We read lots of picture books about our topic, watch a few movies, go on a field trip or two (if possible) and try to really immerse ourselves in that time period.

We read a lot of great books (which I shared about here)

We watched Newsies; learning about the orphans who used to sell newspapers on the street corners for the local newspaper companies.

We went to the Museum of Work and Culture to learn about the emergence of mills in New England as well as how they evolved over time.  We toured the Slater Mill too; which was the very first mill in America.   We walked through the Breakers mansion (the summer cottage of the Vanderbilt family) and talked about how they made the bulk of their money during this time in history.

We talked about the invention of Morse code and tried writing using a cipher, we practiced sewing by hand and using a basic sewing machine, and tried a simple recipe for gruel like the ones children would eat in the orphanage.
