Weekly Wrap- Up: The Week We Started Our New Co-Op

We had another busy week and with three straight days of pouring rain it felt dreary and I had to force myself out of the house.  Of course once we were out and about we were glad to have left the house.  We started our first week of our new co-op and we had a great time trying out all sorts of wonderful Halloween themed activities with our friends.

We had an unexpected day at home on Friday.  We were supposed to meet up with friends to go hiking but we had to postpone our hike.  The boys all worked on a bit of schoolwork; knocking out a few more pages in their grammar books and math books.  They enjoyed a bit of time to read and we read two more books together about the civil rights movement.  After lunch Ian headed off to work with this grandfather and the younger two boys and I went for a little walk.  It was a beautiful fall day and we wanted some fresh air.

The boys all worked pretty hard on Saturday.  Ian went to work with his grandfather and the younger two were helping us move and paint a shed.  We did have a few errands to run so they got lunch at Subway out of it and it was such a perfect fall day that no one minded being outside.

Sunday Ian headed off to work and the younger boys took off on their bikes after breakfast.  Eventually all three boys ended up back at our house and helped paint our workshop. We broke for the night and I cajoled all the boys into dressing up just a bit so I could take their annual fall photos.  Then we headed inside for dinner and a movie.

We got one coat done on one side... just need a second coat and the other three sides!

We met up with our friends on Monday for our postponed hike.  We were bummed that it was such a cloudy/ foggy day as we hoped to be able to see all the fall foliage and perhaps even the Boston skyline in the distance but the weather just would not cooperate.  Other than the fog we had a great hike!  We ate lunch at the top and the kids all played on the summit tower for a bit before we headed back down the mountain and back home.  After dinner Evan, myself and my husband played a game of Harry Potter Scene It while the older two boys played basketball and rode bikes outside.

We had a busy day on Tuesday with karate class in the morning with our art class immediately following it.  That meant we had to pack lunches, bring our school books in the car, and get out of the house nice and early.  The boys just worked on math, cursive and some reading.  Alec had a great time drawing feathers at art class while Evan played outside with the host family's dog.  It was pouring rain by the time we arrived home so I let the boys play video games all afternoon.  Ian worked out for a bit and played an intense game of ping pong with his dad while they were cooking dinner on the grill.  (Yep, even in the rain we cook on the grill; we just bring it under our patio).

We were spending most of the day at home on Wednesday.  We were having our septic tank pumped and had to wait around for the truck.  It was another rainy, miserable day and I was happy to have an excuse to stay in my comfy clothes.  The boys worked on some schoolwork; math, spelling, English/Grammar, and reading.  We also started a new family read aloud and ended our civil rights movement unit.  Alec and Evan played outside in the rain for a bit and watched an episode of Wild Kratts after lunch. They turned it into a fun movie afternoon complete with fresh popcorn.  After dinner Ian went to work in the blacksmith shop with his father.  He's working on making a dagger.

We did a bit of schoolwork on Thursday morning before heading out for the first day of our new co- op.  The boys all worked on writing, math, reading.  They watched an episode of Mythbusters during lunch and then we headed out to meet up with our new group.  The boys could choose between decorating or carving pumpkins, relay races, beading, making woven place mats, and scratch art fall leaves.  Ian mostly sat and watched while the younger two boys tried their hand at pumpkin decorating, leaf art, and relay races.

  1. What a wonderful week. Our family happens to LOVE rain so rainy days are adored around here. But, I know it does get old after awhile. The co-op looks like fun.
    Blessings, Dawn

    1. I always enjoy the first day or so of rain but do get sick of it after awhile. The younger boys kept playing outside and getting soaked so they didn't mind much at all.

  3. Oh how fun starting a new co-op. The childrens librarian emailed a woman about getting my hooked up with a local co-op, but I haven't heard from anyone yet. :( It's kind of hard to find groups around us...At least that I can click with. ha ha #fabfridaypost

    1. It has been a lot of fun and I love that this co-op is so much more laid back than any of the others we have looked into joining. We view it more as social time and have at least one or two moms planning activities for the "class" just so the kids don't get bored and go crazy. I'm sorry you're having a hard time finding a group; it can take time. We are so fortunate to have so many groups that we click well with... in fact this year it's making our schedule feel quite hectic but I wouldn't trade spending time with all our wonderful friends for anything. I hope you find your "tribe" soon!

    1. I am loving how serious he is taking his art class. He does love to draw but rarely takes the opportunity to do that at home. They had a great time trying to balance pumpkins on their heads (they tried balancing them on their backs too while crawling but I didn't get a picture of those).
