15 World War I Books

When I saw the suggestions for Children's Literature in January on Homegrown Learners I just knew our next history unit had to be about World War I.  We covered World War II last year and my boys and I had so much fun reading all the wonderful books we found.

I didn't know as much about World War I and wanted to find really great books that would grab our attention and spark our interest.  I've also expanded our unit to include stories about what was happening in America at the time of World War I and to study Woodrow Wilson; our president at the time too.

We had already read Shooting at the Stars as one of our Christmas books and I thought that would be the perfect introduction into our new unit.

Here are the other books we'll be reading and looking at:

1.  Where Poppies Grow by Linda Granfield. A scrapbook of original documents, photos and memorabilia from World War I.

2.  Bunny The Brave War Horse by Elizabeth MacLeod.  A cute story about a brave horse during world war 1.

Bunny the Brave War Horse;Based on a True Story by [MacLeod, Elizabeth]

3.  Stubby The War Dog: The True Story of World War I's Bravest Dog by Ann Bausum.  While the pages of this book remind me more a textbook than a picture book I know my boys will be interested in the true story of this war dog.

4.  Darling, Mercy Dog of World War I by Alison Hart.  My boys just love these type of chapter books where the story is told from the perspective of the dog.

5.  Christmas Truce: A Story of World War I  by Aaron Shepard.  A fictional letter of one soldier writing home about the miraculous Christmas truce.

Christmas Truce: A Story of World War 1 by [Shepard, Aaron]

6. The Tortoise and the Soldier; A Story of Courage and Friendship in World War I by Michael Foreman.  A chapter book full of wonderful, colorful illustrations depicting a friendship between a soldier and the tortoise he finds in the trenches.

7. Fly Cher Ami, Fly! The Pigeon Who Saved the Lost Battalion by Robert Burleigh.  The story of Cher Ami, one of the 600 carrier pigeons used during World War 1.

8. Train to Somewhere  By Eve Bunting.  Between the 1850's and the late 1920's many orphans were brought from New York City orphanages to new families out west.

9. Women in World War I by Nick Hunter.  A wonderful non- fiction book looking at the roles women played during World War 1.

10. World War I for Kids: A History with 21 Activities by R. Kent Rasmussen.  We've used these history with activity books before and I just love the activity suggestions combined with facts and information.

11. Everything World War I by Karen Kenney.  My kids love these Everything books by National Geographic filled with beautiful pictures and lots of facts.

12. World War I Flying Ace by Richard Mueller.  My boys love these choose your own way novels!

13.  War Game: Village Green to No Man's Land by Michael Foreman. Another book that depicts the football game played between German and English soldiers on Christmas day.

14.  Woodrow Wilson: Twenty- Eighth President (Getting to Know the US Presidents)-- We love these Getting to Know books.

15.  Rags: Hero Dog of World War I; A True Story by Margot Raven.  I can not wait to read this touching picture book with my boys.  The story of one orphaned dog that becomes a heroic war dog.

    1. I try really hard to find fun and engaging books for history. I hated learning about history until I started reading historical fiction books myself... now I'm having a great time learning about all the wars alongside my boys.

  4. I studied history at school but should have paid more attention according to my hubby. My favourite author is Michael Morpurgo and these books would look right alongside his works I think. #familyfun

    1. History is definitely not my strong suit! I had to re-write this list after I had the wrong books picked out for the wrong US president during World War I.
