Beavertail Lighthouse Field Trip


The boys and I headed to Beavertail Lighthouse a few weeks ago.  

We had never been but had heard it was a lovely park.  The weather was just perfect for visiting the ocean and we were excited to see the lighthouse up close.  Unfortunately, the museum and mini aquarium were already closed for the season.  We vowed to go back one day in the spring to check them out.


There were signs everywhere and we learned all about the history of the area

We enjoyed seeing the cruise ships in the harbor 

Checking out tide pools; Alec stumbled upon a few with some rather large fish.
He kept trying to get them back under the water. 

Evan loved this rock formation; two types of rocks meet and he thought
it looked just like a dragon's back.

We saw so many neat rock formations and marveled over all the layers of rock.

    My husband and I have a fascination with light houses and have been to most of them in Michigan. What a great little trip!

    I see we are neighbors!

    My husband and I haven't been to Beavertail in such a long time. There really is no excuse as it is only about an hour from us. :-) It truly is such a beautiful place.

    Thanks for sharing your unschooling field trip! It brought back nice memories of my homeschooling days. :-)

      I had never been before but we will definitely be going back. Funny enough we tend to visit for Wetherill a few times each year and just never realized how close those two places were.

I haven't done a 3 Things Thursday since November of 2023; I had hoped to make it a fairly regular thing but turns out coming up with 3 things to share about each of us at the same time is much harder than I thought. Favorite TV Shows Growing Up in the 80's and early 90's

Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? I can remember planning sleepovers and time with friends around TV Show lineups of our favorite shows... or else trying to set the VCR to record our favorite shows if we weren't going to be home. And through the years I had SO MANY favorites! Growing pains aired in 1985 which put me around age 8 and it stayed on the air until I was 15 or so; I'm pretty sure most people in my age group watched mostly for Kirk Cameron and all his antics.  I still have a soft spot for family sit-coms!  The Facts of Life aired when I was just 2  and stayed on the air until I was 11 so I'm sure the episodes I remember so fondly were either some of the later ones and then reruns shown later on when I was old enough to watch from the beginning. Share Our Lives: How I Stay Connected with My Spouse

This month for Share Our lives we're talking about staying connected. I decided to focus on how my husband and I have stayed connected all these years. We began dating at 16 which means we've been together more than 30 years!   From the time my boys were very young I was very aware of the fact that my marriage was meant to be my lifelong relationship and while I'd obviously have a relationship with my boys for their whole lives as well (I hoped!) I knew it was my job to raise them to leave. 15 Family Restaurant Games

When my boys were little and we'd take them out to eat I kept a small bag of toys in the car to grab on our way into any restaurant.  That way they would be entertained and a bit quieter while we enjoyed our meal. Now that the boys are older we don't keep a bag of toys handy but we do have few games we use to keep the boys occupied if they start getting bored or squirmy while we're waiting for our food or our check. While there are many phone apps, portable gaming systems and electronic games that could occupy my kids we prefer to use the time together at restaurants to connect with one another and so we tend to play games like: Hangman--   any restaurant that has paper place mats works well for this.  We take turns picking  a word and drawing our hangman stand then take turns calling out letters and seeing if we can solve the puzzle.   Tic Tac Toe-- This works best with pen on paper place mats but we have played making a grid with butter knives ...

Our Family's Egg Roll in a Bowl Recipe

 I first saw an egg roll in a bowl on Holly's blog and we followed her recipe exactly but as time went on I started adding other things to our recipe so while I'm sure it's not really an egg roll in a bowl recipe with our additions the name stuck. We do like the addition of more fruits and veggies and I hope you do too!    Ingredients: Makes 4 very large servings if eating by itself 6 servings if you serve it over rice. 1.3 lbs ground lean turkey (or beef/chicken/tofu crumbles) 1 small onion; chopped  2 cloves garlic; minced  1/2 head of cabbage; shredded (about 6 cups) 1 cup shredded carrot 2 cups pineapple chunks 1 cup sliced mushrooms  1 handful pea pods   2 Tablespoons soy sauce or coconut aminos 1 Tablespoon ginger 1 pinch of red pepper flakes or 1 tsp hoisin sauce   Optional cooked rice to serve it over   First I cook up the ground turkey with the garlic and onion until the turkey is cooked through and the onions are nice and sof...
