Throwback Tuesday: Computer Coding for Kids

*Originally shared May 13, 2015 when the boys were 11, 9, & 7   My boys had an amazing day!!! It was one of those homeschooling days that I know they'll be talking about for months, if not years, to come. There was a homeschool field trip to the Microsoft store for a free coding class that we were participating in. I was half excited and half dreading it; I knew the kids would love the class and the experience but I'm not a huge fan of driving through cities, in traffic, or to any place new.  Homeschooling has really forced me to try new things outside of my comfort zone.  We're constantly trying new things, driving to new places, and meeting new people; all things that tend to make me uneasy.  As usual it was a good thing we went. We had such an amazing day! I know I keep saying that but it really was amazing! And you just can't beat free! Books for Learning about France

My middle son is quite obsessed with France right now.

He just wrote all about France for his geography fair report and while I think we may have exhausted our library's list of books he's still quite eager to learn anything about it that he can.



Some of his favorite books for learning about France include:


Let's Go Hugo-- A cute story about a bird living in Paris who is afraid to fly until he meets a friend and together they finally go off exploring the city.


The Moon Was the Best-- Beautiful photographs and a short story showing the simple pleasures of Paris.

Minette's Feast-- a cute story about Julia Child and her cat, Minette.


A Walk in Paris-- Filled with tons of information this cute story takes the reader on a walk through Paris following a young girl and her grandpa.


The Mona Lisa Caper-- Based on a true event this book about the time the Mona Lisa was stolen!


Adele & Simon-- An adorable story about a sister and brother; while walking her brother home he looses pieces along the way as he's distracted by the sights and sounds of the city.


Paris In the Spring With Picasso -- A fast paced story about a soiree that really brings the art world to life.
 

The Cat Who Walked Across France-- A story about a cat who is taken to a new home after his owners dies; he soon starts working his way across France back to the home he once knew and loved.

Flat Stanley Worldwide Adventures; Framed in France-- We love Flat Stanley and all of his adventures and this book was no different.  


This is Paris-- Another series we just love!  This books takes readers through all the important buildings and monuments in Paris with lots of wonderful pictures.

      It really is! I love hearing french spoken aloud... even if I can't always understand what they are saying.

When my boys were little and we'd take them out to eat I kept a small bag of toys in the car to grab on our way into any restaurant.  That way they would be entertained and a bit quieter while we enjoyed our meal. Now that the boys are older we don't keep a bag of toys handy but we do have few games we use to keep the boys occupied if they start getting bored or squirmy while we're waiting for our food or our check. Ian is starting a new film study unit in our homeschool.  He loves watching movies and when I found the Thinking Tree Film Study Journal I just knew Ian would love the opportunity to watch movies as part of his homeschooling day. I also ticked a lot more books off of my 52 book list (many of which happened completely by mistake-- which is really unusual when I've gotten so far into the list).  1. Favorite TV Shows Growing Up in the 80's and early 90's

Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? I can remember planning sleepovers and time with friends around TV Show lineups of our favorite shows... or else trying to set the VCR to record our favorite shows if we weren't going to be home. And through the years I had SO MANY favorites! Growing pains aired in 1985 which put me around age 8 and it stayed on the air until I was 15 or so; I'm pretty sure most people in my age group watched mostly for Kirk Cameron and all his antics.  I still have a soft spot for family sit-coms!  The Facts of Life aired when I was just 2  and stayed on the air until I was 11 so I'm sure the episodes I remember so fondly were either some of the later ones and then reruns shown later on when I was old enough to watch from the beginning. 10 of Our Favorite Ways to Serve/Eat Pulled Pork

My husband makes pulled pork fairly frequently.  I started making pulled pork in the crock pot years ago and we've since tried a few different recipes (like this cranberry BBQ pulled pork ) but it wasn't something I thought about very often.  All that changed when my husband got a smoker as an early Father's day gift a couple of years ago!   Now, I feel like we have been eating pulled pork at least a few times a month (and when I say we I really mean they as I hardly ever eat any at all because I don't like pork or smoked meats).  He'll usually smoke up a few pork butts and shred them both then we eat some for dinner and sort the rest into a couple of freezer portions for easy, nearly ready-made weeknight dinners.  1.
