Making Birdseed Wreaths

We were so excited that it was finally December first.

The boys happily dug into their advent calendar candies and went in search of our Elf.  They asked about our crafts for the day and I warned them they still have to do math and reading every day and then we'll pick our daily craft or do some holiday baking or something else equally fun.

Once their schoolwork was finished and we had all our supplies assembled we worked together to make a few birdseed wreaths.

I had the boys take turns measuring, mixing, and reading the instructions.  Rather than double the recipe we had found we decided to mix them up in two separate batches.  We were making two wreaths for some of our bird enthusiast relatives and I think the boys really enjoyed this craft.

They will have to dry and firm up overnight and we'll add some hanging ribbons to them before wrapping them up.

Pretty nice Christmas gifts for bird lovers!

They were so easy to make too.

We sprayed a bundt pan with cooking spray to stop it from sticking and then mixed an envelope of Knox gelatin with 1 cup of warm water.  Once it was dissolved we added in 3/4 cup of flour and 3 Tablespoons of clear corn syrup.  Finally we mixed in 4 cups of bird seed and then pressed it all into the bundt pan.

We left it overnight to dry and harden.

  2. We need to try this out! I've seen these before and was excited to find an old bundt pan in one of our garages that a previous owner had left. (Long story, lots of junk left. lol) Now I can actually try them out! My 5 year old really likes birds and it's kind of rubbed off on me. ha ha #fabfridaypost

    1. My middle son was obsessed with birds for years and I have to admit watching the birds at his feeder and learning all the different types really got me so interested in them all.
