Recipes We've Been Making This Winter

I actually cringed a bit looking at all the sweet recipes we've been making that combined with all the breads and carbs sure shows me where those added pounds came from!

I am always cooking up new recipes as I just love to experiment in the kitchen.  I often take photos and share the recipes on my blog because I rarely actually follow a recipe or it's instructions!  There are times however where we make little to no changes and so I don't share them as they aren't mine.

But I can't tell you how many times we've tried a recipe, loved it, and then were never able to find the same one again!  Does that happen to you?

I thought one way I might be able to prevent that was to start a mini blog series where I hope to share at least a few times a year what recipes we've been trying.  I'll give the name of the recipe, a link to the blog where we found it and one of my own pictures.

Alec made these Crusty French Baguettes 4 Hour Recipe by All Our Way-- he followed the recipe using tap water instead of distilled water and adding about one additional cup of flour until we had a dough ball with our dough hook. They were delicious and so easy that we've already made them more than once!

Alec also made us some flatbread pizzas using this Easy Flatbread Recipe from A Virtual Vegan.  The flatbread was so easy to make and the pizzas tasted great.

For Thanksgiving I whipped up a batch of these Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bars by Nancy C. adding in 1 cup of white chocolate chips in place of the nuts.  My family loved them.

We tried these amazing Vanilla Buttermilk Spice Waffles by Of The Hearth ; they were delicious! I did double the recipe and since I didn't have buttermilk on hand I used sour milk substitute and then used 1 cup milk and 1 cup eggnog for the milk portion of the recipe (since I was running out of milk).  They are a new family favorite and perfect for this time of year-- again this is a recipe we've already made more than once!

We made Grandma's 20 Minute Quick & Easy Yeastless bread Dinner Rolls by Typically Topical one night to go with our beef stew.  They weren't all that bad for being such a quick recipe. Though they did remind us more of biscuits than rolls.  It was perfect for us in that we only had an hour or so before dinner and were out of most essential ingredients for traditional biscuits like eggs and cream of tarter.

Alec used this sugar cookie recipe to make his sugar cookie/gingerbread house.  I'm not usually one to like any sort of sugar cookie but I have to admit the house and the leftover dough we had that we rolled out into cutout cookies were very tasty.

Alec also made fresh buttery croissants on Christmas morning using this recipe-- just a word of caution; make sure you cook them on a rimmed baking sheet because the melted butter goes everywhere!  They were absolutely delicious though and they reheated beautifully too.

I made up a loaded broccoli casserole for Christmas dinner using this Loaded Cauliflower and Broccoli Casserole by Ev's Eats and it was a huge hit! I just subbed out all broccoli and since I only had frozen on hand I used that instead.  It was delicious but definitely a "cheat" kind of side dish with all that cheese and bacon.  Sadly we gobbled it all up before I managed to take a photo!

Alec whipped up a batch of butterscotch truffles using this recipe-- they were so sweet and so good!  I could not stop eating them.  We did omit the sea salt (since I don't like sea salt with my desserts) and used coconut oil in place of the shortening.

Alec made this cinnamon swirl bread from for culinary class and chose to make it with the mentioned cream cheese glaze; it did not disappoint! Though we all agreed we would have doubled the cinnamon/sugar mixture that gets swirled in as we really like cinnamon.

We made hot cocoa bombs the 3 Winks Way we did use white chocolate melt and Alec's favorite Arctic White cocoa to make ours.  They were a lot more work than we thought they were worth and I'm not sure we'll be making them again but I did think they turned out cute with the added decorations.

  6. You have the best recipes. I bought the hot chocolate bomb molds from your Amazon post because I trust your recipes lol. I still haven't made them....doing that today as a home economics project lol.

    1. I hope they go well for you. We struggled to get the chocolate thick enough that they didn't break as soon as we tried to unmold them.

    1. They are very time consuming with all the folding and resting. We typically make the dough at least 24 hours in advance.

  14. This is exactly why I recently revived my cooking/recipe blog! Not because I have so many original recipes, but I do like to keep track of what I've cooked and the changes I make. I'm so impressed about the croissants. I've heard they're pretty challenging! Thanks for linking up with Hello Monday! Tanya - The Other Side of the Road

  18. Wonderful collection! It is really hard to pick what to try first, but the dinner rolls and stew sure look comforting. I also liked the combination of traditional and more contemporary candy on the gingerbread house; the KitKat flower boxes look adorable with gumdrop blooms.
