Weekend Wellness; Walking

I skipped last month's wellness weekend because I didn't feel like I had much to say.  Health-wise I felt like everything was just going the same-- I was struggling to drop those 5 lbs. I had put back on.  We were hiking a bit but it was still pretty hot and buggy.  I was waiting on my surgery and felt like that was weighing on my mental health as well.

This month I think just about everything has changed!

I did really well with my surgery.  Everything was done laparoscopically so my recovery so far has been much easier than anticipated.  I was up and walking around the hospital that very evening.  My nurses and even the doctors kept remarking that I was doing amazingly well.  I had pep and energy, I had a decent appetite, and I only used Motrin and Tylenol to combat the pain (because there really wasn't much).

When I weighed in just a few days after surgery I was back at my goal weight.  I knew that wouldn't last though as I was told I had to eat well and was not allowed to exercise beyond walking for 6 weeks (something I'm still waiting for!-- We've had beautiful weather and I am really sad to watch so many hiking days passing us by).

Luckily I had gone hiking the day before my surgery hoping it would hold me over until November.

I spent my first few days at home mostly lying in bed.  I did get up and walk around the house and even out and around the yard a time or two.

By the time my two week check-up came up I had been up and walking for a good 20 minutes at a time. The doctor was really pleased with my progress but reminded me that even if I feel good and I'm healing well on the outside most of my stitches and healing are happening on the inside so I still need to take it easy.

Evan often offered to walk with me to the end of our road and back and while it exhausted me the first time by the third time we had walked that path I debated about adding onto our walk.

I have started grocery shopping with my husband and while I still don't push the carriage around the store I can make it through the whole store without getting exhausted.

Tomorrow marks 3 weeks since my surgery and I am hopeful that next month's wellness post will find me back to my old self (minus the pain that led to surgery!).

  3. It is hard to get back to yourself after surgery. I had two c-sections and I know how hard it was to recover from both of those, so hang in there. Easier said than done, I know. :)
Side note- I love how you call the "cart" at the grocery store a carriage. :)

  5. Joanne, I am so glad that you are halfway your recovery period! You will be back to hiking and walking in no time. With regard to the last 5 pounds...I have been fighting those same pounds myself and I don't understand why it's so hard when everything I read says it is normal for your weight to fluctuate 5-7 pounds everyday. My weight does not even change 1 pound throughout the day which is totally mind boggling to me. If I eat and go to the bathroom and all that stuff, it should change a little bit! Anyway, I linked a post from last October about mammograms and women's wellness. Thanks for joining my link party!

    1. My weight doesn't seem to change from day to day either and I am now definitely back to wanting to drop 5-7 lbs. It's hard to drop pounds when I can't do much of anything.. though we have been walking and I've even made it an hour to an hour and twenty minutes this week!! That felt great. (Then I ate a peanut butter cup). :)

  6. It must be so hard to remember the internal healing when you're feeling more like your old self. I hope these last weeks of recovery go quickly for you.
