6th Grade Mid- Year Check- In

Now that we are firmly in the trenches of middle school we rely quite a bit more on traditional schoolwork during our school year.  I like to check back in around the mid-way point of our school year and see how we're doing with what we had planned.

Here are our selections for the school year:

Spelling/Grammar/ Language Arts/ writing:  He picked out this cursive joke book to continue practicing his cursive. We've been using this a few times a week and I am seeing huge improvements in his ability to read and write in cursive (even occasionally writing a word in cursive when he isn't using this book!)

We'll be using All About Spelling Grades 4 & 5 We are on our third lesson in the 5th grade book so we're slightly ahead of where I thought we'd be!

He enjoyed Write Shop Junior so much this past year that we'll go onto book F. We are on lesson 6 of 10 so we're doing really well.

We picked out Grammar and Punctuation Grade 6 for review of English grammar.  We have less than 25 pages left so we should be finishing this up in just a few weeks.

Math: We just started using the Key to Series last year with Evan and he really liked them so we'll finish up the Key to Measurement and add in Decimals and possibly even Percents depending on time. We finished up measurements and are 1/3 of the way through percents (we decided to tackle that before decimals).

Science: We'll be covering a variety of topics using movies, picture books, field trips, and self- interest with lots of nature hikes and exploration thrown in too. Both of his brothers are focusing on chemistry this year so I'm sure Evan will be joining in with them in observing labs too. Check!

Reading: he'll continue to read any books of his own choosing making sure to read for at minimum of 15 minutes each day. We'll keep listening to a few books on CD and enjoying some family read alouds too. Check!

Geography:  We'll continue to pick regions to learn about through books and movies.  We'll play games and travel try out new foods from around the world. Check!

History: We'll be focusing a bit more on government and how it works.  We found this movie: Understanding Government that we plan to use in conjunction with reading books, exploring our state house, sitting in on a town meeting or two and watching many more movies.

We'll be rounding out his school year with art classes, listening to music, going on hikes, bike rides, and roller skating with our friends.

All in all I'm pretty pleased with how our year is going.  We do need to focus a bit more on government and geography but other than that we're doing quite well.

    1. I hope so; but it's awfully hard to tell. I try to just focus on them and where they are at in each subject.

  2. I love how you did a mid-year check in. It's a great idea! I also enjoyed reading about your son's curriculum. I have a 6th grader so it's interesting to compare what other people are using to what we are using. I bet my 6th and 4th graders would love the cursive joke book.

  4. I remember when it dawned on me that at a certain point I was spending more time on "traditional" school subjects simply because kids need that information or skill under their belt in order to succeed in higher education. These resources look great.

    1. Exactly. We turned our focus to more traditional schooling these past few years as Alec has made known his desire to go to a more traditional school.
