10 Science Kits and Tools We Love

So many homeschoolers I know talk about how they are intimidated by teaching science.

I'll be honest, I just don't understand that.  I LOVE science.

Luckily my boys do too.  In fact one of the only stipulations they had when we started homeschooling was that we had to have science every day.

And we did!

For the longest time we ran some sort of science experiment every day.  We made goop, play doughs, set off Mentos volcanoes, played with pop rockets, made our own volcano and did countless candy science experiments. We had fun with it.

Science is definitely one of those subjects that work best if you can keep it as hands on as possible.  That's why we just love science kits and tools.

Over the years we've found some really great ones.  Here is a list of our 10 Favorite science kits and tools:

1.  Microscope-- It was the one purchase I was loathe to make but once we put the money into it and got a really nice microscope we realized that it was worth it! We love using our microscope and it's opened up a whole new world for us. We love it!

2.  Remote Control Vehicle Kits-- I don't even remember when or where my boys got this kit but they just love it!  We've built many of the vehicles and so far they have all worked beautifully!

3.  Snap Circuits-- I can not say enough good things about snap circuits.  We have two separate kits and my kids just love the easy to follow instructions.  It's a great hands on way to learn about electrical circuits.

4.  Ultimate Crystal Growing Kit-- We have made several of the crystals in this kit and so far they have all been successful.  The instructions are easy to follow and the results have been beautiful.

5.  Molecule kit-- Yes, my boys are pretty young to learn about molecules but they were interested and we found these fun snap together molecule kits.

6.   Geodes-- My boys got these a few years ago for Easter and they're still talking about them.  They had so much fun hammering them open and checking out the inside of the rocks.

7.  Big Bag Of Science-- This kit was filled with fun, quick, and easy experiments.  We got it a little over a year ago and we have only used half of the supplies so far but the boys just love the test tubes, super absorbent polymers and colored tabs.

8.  Makey Makey--  We have had such a fun time playing with and experimenting with all of the uses of the Makey Makey.  At this point I have a whole board on Pinterest of ideas to try with it.  The kids love it!

9.  Smart Robot-- Ian put this robot together one day a few years ago and the boys were so amazed that it could correct itself and turn around that they spend another hour making mazes for it and trying to stump it.  It was fun and fairly simple to put together.

10.  Magic Science Kit for Wizards-- This was a kit mainly used by my younger two boys as part of their Harry Potter craze.  They got to make magic wands, color changing potions, glow in the dark potions and a test tube crystal ball.  It was a lot of fun.

  1. I'm always looking for science activities for kids. I just got a pulley kit (since I figured it's too tedious to actually make one!) for my 4 year old and it will be our next project.

Would love to see your posts in the practical mondays link up!

    1. Math is one subject we have just about ALWAYS used a curriculum to teach; I do supplement with games and real life math lessons (like having them figure out the tip on a bill or add up the approximate total of their purchases BEFORE getting to the registers) but just felt like they needed a good linear foundation for math that was best taught with books.

  4. Thank you for this list. Ethan has a Science week at school coming up and his homework was to show a science demonstration to the class. And I have no clue what to do. So this will be very useful when I have a chance to sit down with him later. Thank you!
