Not Just a Mom-- Favorite Workout Places & Vidoes

This month's Not Just a Mom group is discussing our favorite Workout Places but since I really only workout at home (and then enjoy hiking in the great outdoors) I'm mostly going to be focusing on what sorts of workouts I like to do in my home.

I hope you'll head over and check out my co-hosts posts too and if you wrote up one of your own please link it up with us below.

While my favorite workout is always a good long hike it's just not possible to fit that into my daily lifestyle.  So I've been making an effort to exercise at home each and every weekday for the past month or so (and off and on for years).

I have a collection of DVD's I enjoy.  Here's a quick photo of a few of my favorites:

But in the past year I've started using YouTube videos and have found lots of really fun ones I enjoy.

1. Anything by Caroline Girvan is a hit and I'm currently making my way through her FUEL series.

2. After a few days of working with Caroline I often feel my muscles tightening up and use a few Yoga with Adrienne videos to relax.

3. When I'm stuck at home due to weather or something like that and I haven't gotten anywhere near my step goal in awhile I like to walk along to Get Fit With Rick.  While my step count never matches his; he does have some fun steps and usually some pretty great music to listen to too.

I will randomly do searches for specific workouts too- like "stability ball exercises" and have found a few I like:

Or "abdominal workout"

I have workout space right in my bedroom so I often work out first thing in the morning around 5 am while my husband is off to work and the boys haven't really woken up yet. Then I can jump in the shower real quick and make sure Alec is up at 5:45to get ready for school.

Evan and I do like to go for short easy hikes or walks daily when weather permits and we've joined back up with our Friday hiking group for socialization and exercise.

What's your preferred method of working out?

I hope you'll join us next month when we share how we host.

  1. I was very much a work out at home Mum. I loved my DVDs and the Cher workout was my favourite. I also loved the Wii Fit board and would exercise at home with that, I loved step exercise, boxing and yoga. I don't think I've ever set foot in a gym apart from doing physio therapy when I learnt to walk again. Sadly I can do nothing but armchair exercises now, but you can most definitely keep fit at home.

  2. You should write a book on hiking- you are the pro!

  3. Thanks for the inspiration! I'm going to look for some YouTube videos. I found a few that I like for toned arms, but I only did it a few times, then forgot. I hope you have a great day!

  4. Joanne,
Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by!! Loved this article and enjoyed seeing what you are doing to maintain your exercise regime when you can not get out to hike...I have started walking twice daily and added that to an exercise program i do 4-5 times a week which includes 5 miles on my stationary bike in 20 minutes...Since June, I have lost 22 pounds and will be doing a post soon on my Journey to a healthy Life...Thanks for sharing your tips!!

    1. Yes! I used to exercise along with her when I was first married-- she had two back to back workouts in the morning on Lifetime network. I loved all the beautiful spaces she found to workout too.

    1. I have never been a jogger or a runner of any kind but I envy those that enjoy it.

  7. I really like the YouTube workout videos especially if they're to music that I like. I have done a few of that guys who does the Steps workouts. They're fun. x

  8. Hiking is always great - my mom used to love Denise Austen way back when. I am all about my Peloton bike, runs, and strength!

    1. I have bad knees so biking is tough for me; though they are better now that I've been hiking so much so maybe I should give biking (stationary or otherwise) another try.

  9. Thanks for the recommendations. You always have a knack for writing posts at the perfect time when I need it.

  10. ...here is no more important job than being a mom. My wife of 54 years is the best, just ask her children and grandchildren.

  11. You are such an inspiration with the hiking you do with your sons and group. I have done YouTube videos from time to time to exercise but I need to be more consistent with my exercising! I try to go for walks in our neighborhood.

    1. I struggle with consistency too; I do really great for long stretches of time and then get out of that habit and have to work so hard to get it going again.

  12. I love to hike but have to drive anywhere to go hiking so usually I just walk in our neighborhood and into town. I also run regularly. I don't think I've ever worked out to an exercise video. I'm kind of intrigued now...

    1. We have lots of hiking trails within a 20-30 minute drive and as long as we're hiking longer than we're in the car I don't mind the drive but it's definitely not something we can manage to do each day.

  13. It's amazing how many workouts there are on You Tube now! Thanks for the fun link up!

  14. I used to do you tube workouts too. Now I just go to the gym and use my Peloton at home.

    1. I wish we had a gym near us but we really don't; unless I want to spend nearly an hour in the car driving there and back.

  15. I'm always so impressed at how much you walk and hike. And you're right, it's so convenient with the online workouts now. I know our personal trainer always pushed the idea that it's important to have variety to make our muscles work.

  16. Thanks for sharing so many good YT options. I really like to work out (if you can call it that) at home and alone. I've been using the same video on repeat for too long. Changing it up will be great!!

    1. I've always been more comfortable working out at home and alone too. Though I really did enjoy my time at Curves for that very short span of time I attended.

  17. I have been walking away the pounds with Leslie Sansone for years...unfortunately, they seem to run faster than I walk! I need to try the Yoga with Adrienne. I've heard so many good things about her.

  20. I love a free Youtube workout! I have done Yoga with Adrienne before and really like hers! I also love that you have a Denise Austin DVD. I remember doing Denise Austin's with my mom and sisters growing up! She's been making exercise videos since the 90's and still looks fantastic. This is Lauren by the way, not anonymous.
